7. That’s Life

Autumn has routinely been a period of heightened stillness, quiet, and reflection for me. During fall last year I found myself reflecting on my perception of time, connection, and memory. I felt within myself, as I do every year around this time without fail, a growing admiration and acceptance of the transient nature of existence and our experience of it.

All the footage in this cartridge of super 8 was shot in summer ‘23 but for some reason this last year feels like 8 rolled into one in my head and looking back on this genuinely feels like looking back at memories from years ago. Maybe it’s the blossoming of so many new connections and the seeds of different ways of living and being these new connections have planted in my brain. Maybe it’s just me getting older.

I think about the experience of looking back and trying to recall memories, how memories can often be tainted or over-romanticized depending on the new context of people, places, and things we carry into looking back at the past. I document as much as I can of moments and happenings that I know i’ll look back on with fond eyes in the future. I document in as many ways as I can as a way of capturing them for what they were in that exact moment, to return to them whenever I feel inclined to with the same eyes l had in that specific moment regardless of the ever-shifting and flowing relationship dynamics I have to people, places, and memories in themselves. or tbh maybe my libra head ass just tries to capture memories with tools that help me in romanticizing them in the future because sometimes i love to live in a reality where everything is romantic in my head, even the less sweet sides of life. by @cowboyroi
