“We must never forget that Black history is American history. The achievements of African Americans have contributed to our nation’s greatness.”
— Yvette Clarke

This Black History Month, we’d like to pause to honor the late Cleo Hearn. This November, Lancaster lost our hometown National Rodeo Hall of Fame hero. A true legend and trailblazer for Black cowboys. As founder of the Cowboys of Color Rodeo and the first African American to attend college on a rodeo scholarship and win a major calf-roping championship, he opened doors, preserved culture, and expanded the American story for generations to come after him.

Mostly, we honor his legacy of breaking barriers and celebrating diversity in our shared American story. 🖤

The power of a mentor is that they “make us do what we can,” as Ralph Waldo Emerson famously put it, by helping us see our own potential and pushing us to grow. Mentors provide guidance, share wisdom, and offer a sounding board, but their most crucial role is to believe in us and build our confidence, which in turn helps us achieve our goals. Get ya a mentor today … CLEO Mr. @cowboysofcolor , you will forever be missed thanks for being a blessing to so many of us who needed guidance… #imyacrawdaddy #cowboysofcolorrodeo by @cowboysofcolor

Cleo Hearn: The Man Who Roped History

REST IN PEACE

They say when Cleo Hearn rode into the arena, the dust itself stood still to watch.
He wasn’t just another cowboy he was a trailblazer, born with grit in his hands and pride in his saddle.

Back when rodeos weren’t open to everyone, Cleo rode anyway. He roped cleaner, rode sharper, and smiled wider than any man there. Every loop he threw wasn’t just for the calf it was for every cowboy who’d been told no.

He didn’t just ride for trophies. He rode for respect.
And by the time the dust settled, Cleo Hearn had changed the face of rodeo forever.

They still say his spirit rides on quiet, proud, and unbroken
