Mitla: where the world of the living meets the world of the dead. 💀

For the Zapotec people, Mitla — Lyobáa — has long been connected with burial, ancestry, and the passage to the underworld.

During Día de Muertos, Oaxaca changes rhythm. Homes prepare altars, families cook, candles are lit, and the dead are welcomed back into daily life.

Mitla gives us a way to understand memory, continuity, family, and the relationship between the visible and invisible worlds.

While the city celebrates, these older Mesoamerican ideas remain present in the way people honor those who came before.

Learn the territory. Understand the culture.

I went here to see where the story of maize began.🌽

Guilá Naquitz, in Oaxaca’s Tlacolula Valley, holds some of the earliest known evidence of plant domestication in the Americas — including ancient squash and early maize.

Walking here is a way of connecting with a very old relationship between people and the land.

Corn. Squash. Beans. Seeds. Water. Soil.
The foundations of agriculture, community, and much of what later became Mesoamerican life.

Today, that relationship continues through the farmers, families, seeds, food, and knowledge of this territory.

For us, visiting Guilá Naquitz means entering that story with respect — walking carefully, eating locally, learning from the people who care for the land, and understanding why these relationships still matter today.

With gratitude to our friends at @_sembrando_agua @tierradelsol.oaxaca, @jeronimo_mezcal @remedios_del_bosque @threadcaravan @roadsandkingdoms @bruno_florestamx and to everyone working to keep these relationships alive.

📍 Put Guilá Naquitz on your map.

Oaxaca is not a new destination. 🌎

People have been building, farming, creating, believing, and organizing life here for thousands of years.

What makes Oaxaca so special is that this history is still alive. Ancient ways of understanding the world continue to shape the present — in the relationship with the land, food, rain, community, ceremony, art, and daily life.

Zapotec and Mixtec cultures are not only part of the past. They continue to evolve, adapt, and thrive today.

The roots run deep.
The present is alive.

✨Come understand Oaxaca through its history, people, and living cultures.

🚨Wanted: a loving family. Not a perfect one.🚨♥️

A family willing to care for this little dog with all their heart — if she chooses them too.

Her name is Pulga.

We found her near the caves of Mitla during a journey with @roadsandkingdoms & @becino.oax . We had gone there to learn about the beginnings of agriculture in Oaxaca — the domestication of corn, beans, squash, and chiles. We went looking for roots… and somehow, she appeared along the way.

Pulga decided to join the Caravana Canina.

She is a little Zapotec shepherd: sweet, noble, full of energy, gentle, and with the kind of eyes that stay with you.

Now we are looking for a family willing to let this beautiful being become part of their life.

If you feel she could be part of your family, send us a message.

With love,

Go beyond. Ride Oaxaca. by @coyoteaventuras
