I have put together a curated collection of AI artwork, in the form of a beautiful coffee table art book.

Earlier this year, I had mixed feelings about it all. Which is to say, my initial reaction of being impressed with the quality of the images soon gave way to great distaste, as I realized what the rollout of this technology, in this particular fashion, meant for creatives and their industries.

I have since come to the conclusion that the whole recent phenomenon of AI, and the way in which it has been released and treated, is a symptom of something greater. Namely, a kind of cultural alienation that is happening on a broader social level, which may or may not have something to do with the internet and the nature of modern day digital living.

I'm not necessarily entirely anti-AI. I believe that when applied appropriately to the world, it has the potential to create benefit. For instance, in health and medicine. But to effectively claim ownership of all past creative digital output and representation in one bold sweep is a step rather a bit too far.

Furthermore, to do so alongside some vague notion that the machines will come alive, either creating some kind of utopia or destroying humanity entirely, is ludicrous thinking. The mystery of consciousness is not going to be solved in this manner; true artificial intelligence has not been created. In my opinion, this is simply data mining like we never imagined possible.

The good news? AI images are not copyright protected. Works created without human authorship cannot be copyrighted, according to current Canadian and US law. As signalled by the recent court case involving Kris Kashtanova and "Zarya of the Dawn," they are in fact effectively public domain images.

If you ever get sick:
