My homage to Semyon Skrepetsky, the Russian artist assassinated on June 15 for his political satires. I came across Skrepetsky for the first time on May 6, at the opening of the Venice Biennale. He and his bold paintings were standing in the rain in front of a tent marked WE ARE AGAINST EMPIRE, in one of the most important and overlooked unofficial pavilions I visited: the Free Nations League, which their website explains is "an alliance of ethnic and regional movements advocating for the real sovereignty of peoples and territories within Russia…" Very few stopped to listen at that moment as a woman in the tent spoke of artistic repression, prison, torture, and the silencing of languages, but I admired her dignity and felt it might be somehow important to record this brave and fragile moment for posterity. #freedomofspeech taken in Giardini della Biennale by @cpilto

Tickled to see some of my 'point d'ironie' babies exhibited today at the @stedelijkmuseum Amsterdam. As managing editor of this free artist periodical from 1997-2007, I had the honor of birthing the first 43 issues (an 8-page tabloid 'carte blanche') and to give them away around the world - all 100,000 copies - which I would print on cheap rotary newsprint presses somewhere in Europe in the middle of the night. Exciting times! And the project lives - still supported by agnès b. and curated by @hansulrichobrist Vive le point d'ironie! On the wall: an elegant issue created by Ed Ruscha from his mirrored word paintings, and agnès b.'s own issue with the large red @lepointdironie punctuation mark (the irony mark). In the showcase, from left to right: Yoko Ono; Jonas Mekas (number 0); Gabriel Orozco; Yona Friedman; Etel Adnan. Good company. @agnesb_officiel @yokoono @_gabrrriel.orozco_ @edruschaofficial taken in Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam by @cpilto

A year ago today, Matthijs and I skipped an afternoon of work and eloped to Amsterdam city hall for a ‘geregistreerd partnerschap’ aka civil partnership (aka PACS for our French friends). Thinking it would be a quick, unromantic formality, we picked out outfits last minute and arrived a bit late, to the confusion of our three witnesses, who did not know each other, and of the marriage officiant, who was waiting expectantly to perform her very first ceremony. Spoiler alert: She did a beautiful job, we all made it through (although I’m not exactly sure what I promised in Dutch) and had a good laugh -- even the furniture joined in: the floating armoire is by the glorious absurdist artist Wim T. Schippers.
For our funny, improvised, somewhat silly ‘wedding’ day, I owe my eternal gratitude to @philippavanloon for unexpectedly bringing the perfect bouquet that lights up all these pictures, and to Gijs Ockeloen, Myrthe van Dijk, and Philippa for their faithful presence as official witnesses. The photos show us walking through town to the Hotel de l’Europe for an after-celebration, then marching our giddy selves on to the open house of the @rijksakademie artist studios (art = love!?), where more lovely friends and acquaintances cheered us on, not sure what kind of performance this was.
It couldn’t have been a finer day if we had planned it.
Thanks also to the adorable Emily @weightofsnow Bates and @gijsstork for adding their good vibes and photographs to this lot, to dear @sophieberrebiauthor for being there to welcome us home, to Vivian cheering us in spirit from somewhere in the lowlands, and to thoughtful colleagues from @reframingstudio and @worldpressphoto for the joyful flowers.
Because we miss the rest of you - we HOPE to organize a proper party with family and friends when we can step off the treadmill of life long enough to plan it.
P.S. Matthijs, thank you for giving me my new name.

I chose Gabrielle Goliath, Elegy, to open my dive into the Venice Biennale today - this national pavillion of South Africa 🇿🇦 that is not, refused by the government. The sound of her collective single note of mourning is so powerful, so beautifully haunting. It will stick to us as we travel through other spaces, and beyond. Government cannot cancel beauty. "Playing with Fire: An Immersive Odyssey with Yuja Wang", a multisensory Gesamtkunstwerk at the Cité de la Musique, Paris — magique 🔥.
Directed by Pierre-Alain Giraud. Visuals by Gabríela Friðriksdóttir. Perfume-scape by Francis Kurkdjian.
What I’m looking at (and hearing and smelling) is difficult to imagine from this image: A classical concert reimagined in mixed virtual reality. You move through a 360° enchanted landscape, choosing your path. I edged close to Yuja as — “synchronised with the holographic fingers of her virtual self” — she played Ravel and Debussy on the Steinway. With every shift in the music, the scent changed too. A concert where fragrance is treated as composition. #Ravel @philharmoniedeparis #perfumeoriginal by @cpilto

Paris yesterday. Contemplating the Birkenau paintings by Gerhard Richter, each of which, although abstract, is based on a secret photograph of gas chamber victims taken by the Sonderkommando. I was moved to be in the presence of this work, by the beauty created from horror, and having recently read a thought-provoking essay on the subject by @ericdechassey, "Donner à Voir", when I noticed the German-speaking man seated next to me contemplating the price of his shares in Deutsche Telekom. #gerhardrichter #birkenau #stockmarkets @fondationlv taken in Fondation Louis Vuitton by @cpilto
