Before I got sidetracked with all the #SuperRobotWars guidebooks, I was preparing to post this beauty: the official strategy guide for the Super Famicom RPG, Bounty Sword. Being published by Pioneer LDC probably explain why the game's staff includes scenario writer Hiroshi Yamaguchi and character designer and animator extrodinaire, Mahiro Maeda (Kill Bill, Mad Max, Samurai Champloo). And guess what? The guide's packed with his art!

Last, but not least, is #Mediawork's Perfect Strategy Guide for #BattleRobotRetsuden on the Super Famicom, which is basically Super Robot Wars without the super robots or SD. I'm not a huge fan, but I prefer SD designs! The guide book is, however, is excellent just to flick through: a little cell art work, some characters and plenty of colour maps and screens, but the real draw is Susumu Imaishi's gag manga and the diorama work that punctuates the pages.

The #Keibunsha love doesn't stop yet: this is their Super Robot Wars Encyclopedia / #全スーパロボット大戦大百科, covering the series from it's start on the #Gameboy, through to the 4th game on the #SuperFamicom. If you like the series, or even SD robots and only have one book, this is the one you want; they don't waste a single page without art, trivia, guides to the series and how the scenarios work together, quizes and more.

Another #Keibunsha joint, this time for the SRW series off-shoot, Masoukishin The Lord of Elemental! There's not much to say about this book; it does its job wading through the difficult, multi-branching scenario in the game, but there's not a huge amount of art on display, perhaps due to the game being an original IP from #WinkySoft, so lacking the usual #Banpresto backup on the design/art side.

Keibunsha also published a 'lifetime of enjoyment book' for 4th Super Robot War too, and it's much better than the previous EX book (which was in depth to a level most guides don't go, so lofty praise)! So what earns it that praise apart from the rather fantastic character portraits, original robot concept art work for #Grungust, #Huckebein etc, maps and strategies? Well, it's full of trivia, for one. Like the reason behind 4th's odd SFC box design (it's a homage to #Keibunsha's encyclopedia designs - see photo). It also has a very rare interview with the key #WinkySoft staff behind the game (and indeed much of the series). .

Next up is #Keibunsha's 'lifetime of enjoyment book' for #Super Robot War EX or #スーパーロボット大戦EXを一生楽しむ本. This series carries strategy, maps and art, but also focuses on some of the deeper aspects of the game, with background stories, an overview of how the scenarios all work together, a digaram explaining the inter-character relationships and a 16 page comic by Yamabiko Nagao. And plenty of SD robot artwork! Oh, check that #Granzon art on the back cover! Even the baddies look cool in SRW!

And here's another in Futabasha's #完璧攻略シリーズ (Perfect Strategy Series): it's 4th Super Robot War's sure-win strategy guide or #第4次スーパーロボット大戦必勝攻略本. This one has a lot more art than EX, including some Super Real Robot pics at the front, including #Grungust and #Huckebein two of the Banpresto original mechs which made their first appearance in 4th. Other than that, it's the normal feast of maps (not hand-drawn anymore: someone stuck together 100s of screenshots!), stats, art and more.

...and now I can't stop leafing through these #SuperRobotWars guides: they're fantastic. This is the sure-win strategy guide for Super Robot War Ex or #スーパーロボット大戦EX必勝攻略本. It's a functional guide for the game with (hand-drawn!) maps, stats, secret items and info about the three scenarios included for the second SRW game released for the Super Famicom. And, of course, obligatory SD robot art!

I enjoyed #weekofgameguides and ended up pulling out more books than I could post in the week, so here's some more! First up is the official guide for 3rd Super Robot War on the SFC or #第3次スーパーロボット大戦公式ガイドブック I picked this up hoping for plenty of pictures of SD robots, but in stead was greeted with dioramas featuring the kits! That's a lot of work for a guide book! Of course, there's some concept work in the back for the original robots featured in the game, and the rest is packed with stats and strategies to complete it. And that cover: classic anime poster work with the goodies front and centre and the baddies looming ominously in the background.

Slipping into the last day of #weekofgameguides is the #LiveALive Official Adventure Guide Book. Live A Live is an omnibus RPG, taking course across multiple times and places with each episode having a different hero and various play styles (some traditional JRPG, others combat only, etc). The stories all come together at the end for the climax. What makes it special, apart from the gameplay, standout dialog and excellent #YokoShimomura soundtrack, is that each episode was illustrated by a different manga artist and this guide book is full of those illustrations, including the artist for Spriggan, ARMS, Yaiba and Detective Conan. There's another guide book available, with illustrations by Katsutoshi Fujioka (GB SaGa series, #HanjukuHero etc) but if you're a fan of the game, this is definitely the one to get. Hmm, #Shogakkan and high quality guidebooks... do I spot a pattern?

#weekofgameguides continues with another spectacular #Shogakkan effort, this time for Namco's #SuperFamilyTennis. Not only does it feature an overview of tennis and the various strategies and play styles involved, a guide to the game's story mode and more, but there's an interview with Tetsuya Chiba, author of Ashita no Joe too! There's also info about the secret Namco characters (Momo from Wonder Momo and Kai from Tower of Druaga are pictured).

Then there's this unofficial pair of Japan-only guides for the sequel to Paladin's Quest, Lennus 2. Given they're fan-made, the amount of information and data available is impressive and they were certainly a big help when I as finishing it.
