Come join us this week in SEAOC as we welcome Buro Happold with Will Adam and Nicole O'Connor, who are both BS and MS ARCE graduates!
This presentation will give a brief introduction to Buro Happold’s façade team as well as introduce a case study of the University of Michigan Center for Innovation. Currently in construction, this project showcases how unitized façade components can navigate complex architectural features. Similarly, seismic isolation presents the challenge of balancing structural resilience, serviceability, constructability, and long-term performance within a single engineering solution. The second half of this presentation will introduce seismic base isolation through a confidential pedestrian bridge project that utilizes triple friction pendulum isolators to reduce earthquake demands on the structure. It will provide an introduction to isolation elements, the factors that led to their selection for the project, and some of the unique considerations and nuances involved in their analysis and design.

Will Adam graduated from Cal Poly's B.S./M.S. blended Architectural Engineering (ARCE) program in the Class of 2022 and is a façade engineer at Buro Happold.
He specializes in façade structural analysis and the design and development of architectural façade systems.

Nicole O’Connor is a senior structural engineer with Buro Happold who graduated from the ARCE blended program in 2021. She enjoys working on multi-disciplinary projects with complex geometries and challenges. by @cpseaoc

Last month, Cal Poly SEAOC took on Southern California!

11 of our students traveled down the coast for two days of exploring structural engineering practice and graduate education across Orange County and San Diego.

We kicked off the trip with LPA in Irvine, visiting their completed Coastline College project (featuring slanted shear walls!) and got to participate in their monthly company-wide all hands-on meeting. From there we headed south to San Diego to visit the UC San Diego Department of Structural Engineering, where students got an inside look at graduate study and research opportunities in structural engineering.

On Friday, we finished up our SoCal tour with a visit to KPFF in San Diego. We learned a lot about their fascinating projects in the region, and even got to tour a biotech lab they are working on by UCSD’s campus!

Trips like these give our students the opportunity to step outside the classroom and build connections with industry professionals across California and beyond.

A huge thank you to @lpainc, @kpff_sd, and @ucsdstructeng for taking the time to welcome our students and share your experiences with us! by @cpseaoc

Join us this week as we welcome Blake Roskelley from Clark Pacific and enjoy some Petra Mediterranean! Blake will discuss career paths beyond traditional consulting and how to identify opportunities for innovation, and will also be joined by current ARCE student Estevan Perez to share his experience as a Clark Pacific intern this past summer.

Blake is a Cal Poly ARCE alumnus (BS 2009; MS 2010) and a California licensed structural engineer. He currently serves as Director of Preconstruction at Clark Pacific, where he is responsible for the preliminary design coordination and growth of Clark Pacific's data center business. Blake has been with Clark Pacific since late 2019, after spending nearly a decade in structural engineering consulting. by @cpseaoc

While most students were enjoying the first week of school, a select group of SEAOC Student Chapter board members headed to Scottsdale, AZ, for the SEAOC Convention!
Our Vice President, Ryan Lovejoy, and Treasurer, Paul Quinter, had the opportunity to present on the Seismic Outreach Program they implemented at Cal Poly over the past year.
Four other board members — Sierra Lieske, Samantha Mustafa, Katelyn Nguyen, and Cynthia Messing — also attended the convention as volunteers. When they weren’t cooling off by the pool or attending technical sessions, they could be found at the registration desk checking attendees in, answering questions, and helping make the convention a success.
The SEAOC Convention is an incredible opportunity for the structural engineering community to come together, share knowledge and expertise, and build friendships that last a lifetime. We’re grateful to have been a part of it this year and look forward to sending the next group of students to Monterey for next year’s convention! taken in Scottsdale by @cpseaoc
