SALTY STOCKPORT

In my project, I created a culturally inclusive space in Stockport that educates both majority and minority groups about diverse cultures, fostering understanding and comfort for all. This space is especially welcoming to minority groups, offering a ‘home away from home’ atmosphere. The facade design of the building was inspired by salt crystals, a common seasoning across all these cuisines, symbolizing unity and the essential nature of cultural diversity. The facade features intricate patterns that mimic the crystalline structure of salt, creating a visually striking and meaningful exterior. I always strive to enhance cultural competence in my projects to work effectively in diverse global contexts, engaging with clients, communities, and stakeholders from various cultural backgrounds. This project has provided me the opportunity to delve into design development while continuously learning about new cultures through the use of space, environment, and equipment.

Script to Screen

connecting people through the art of film

The film industry has undergone significant transformations due to the advancements in technology and the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI). These changes have impacted virtually every aspect of film-making, from pre- production to post-production, distribution and even audience engagement. Script to Screen is a visionary project dedicated to celebrating the
art of film. With a mission to spotlight Stockport, introducing a film school promises to foster a nucleus for creative expression in the northern region.

The addition of a film school would help stimulate economic growth by cultivating a workforce skilled in modern film technologies and techniques, attracting production and creating jobs. Overall, the community-based film school hopes to enrich local culture, support economic development, and build a more informed and connected community.

The architectural design prioritises user experience
and optimum comfort levels. In response to climate change’s imperative, this project commits to embed sustainable practices throughout its conception and execution.

Re-imagining the construction of buildings

What if new buildings grew from the existing ones? What if buildings didn’t have to be demolished? What if materials don’t end up in landfill sites? These were the driving forces behind the ‘Phoenix Project’ - a vocational center that establishes itself as a beacon of innovation for Stockport by educating, inspiring, and influencing people and construction industries locally, nationally, and internationally.

The phoenix project is a testament to buildings that rise from rubble. Observing the numerous abandoned buildings in and around the site in Stockport, inspired the idea of repurposing demolition rubble to reduce construction waste.

Using a brick from a demolition site, I created a 3D-Printable brick filament, which was then used to print facade prototypes with varying transparencies. Using this proof of concept, all types of building components can be created, with the sole purpose of reducing the impact on the environment.

Ourcelium

“Ourcelium” is a community centre/research lab fostering the promising future of Mycelium research. Following the concept of Open Innovation and Citizen Science, the proposal fosters interaction between various user groups to create a hub for knowledge exchange and social activity.

Located along the River Mersey in Stockport, the scheme seamlessly assimilates the natural features of the site back into the urban context. With a lack of green spaces on this side of the river, the project aims to revitalize the area with green stay-zones at street level to provide occupant wellbeing, biodiversity, and promote a lively centre of activity.

Flexible public event spaces and workshop areas are enclosed within a cloud-like volume, levitating above the ground-level green space. Educational opportunities are accommodated in the re-used building on site, where the innovative applications of Mycelium products are exhibited.

The unique appearance of the facade mimics the complex underground networks of hyphae and acts as a visual beacon for the future redevelopment of Stockport. Ourcelium represents the importance of taking notice of the natural world whilst working towards a collaborative future.

SEEDERS

What if a building produced energy instead of consuming it? What if a structure could captivate and engage the public in an unexpected and thrilling manner?

I explore these possibilities in SEEDERS. The outer skin of the building not only serves as an aesthetically pleasing representation of Stockport’s hat-making heritage but is also integrated with solar cells to generate energy. The central double spiral staircase offers the public a panoramic route, allowing them to observe the growing area and the cityscape from the top.

SEEDERS envisions a prototype urban farm lab in Stockport where the methods of future food production are studied and practiced. With a mission to build urban agriculture business models and networks, SEEDERS identifies underused buildings and spaces to transform them into productive, edible landscapes. Beyond its practical functions, it serves as a social hub—a thriving oasis where edible greens flourish and the art of cultivation is shared. As food production thrives, so does the sense of connection, sustainability, and the joy of collective self-reliance.

Centred around mycelium-leather production, the Whycellium hub aims to redefine the town’s identity to meet modern demands. This transformative process challenges conventional views of factories and craftsmanship, following the science-practitioner model, envisaging architecture as a platform for fostering social unity and communal engagement.

The programme supports urban regeneration goals, providing educational resources for sustainable-living practices. Mycelium, a 100% compostable raw material, requires only a fraction of the energy needed to produce plastic or cardboard. Unlike animal-derived materials, mycelium doesn’t emit methane, contributing to a manufacturing cycle that nurtures a localised and circular economy.

Guided by this synergistical ethos, the project seeks to establish a techno-social centre and that merges innovation, practicality, and social engagement, demonstrating various ways to reduce dependence on current polluting industries. By producing mycelium-based products Stockport can become a pivotal centre in this industry, aspiring to a new era of sustainable development.

In response to the evolving dynamics of Stockport’s urban landscape the proposed building aims to bridge the gap between tradition and innovation, creating a space for education and collaboration in technology. As the town undergoes significant redevelopment, a potential divide emerges between the “old” and “new” Stockport, manifested in new developments, namely office and residential complexes around the train station. Its proximity to major cities in the Northwest of the UK draws in more working individuals from nearby areas. However, with this growth comes the risk of potentially losing its identity and becoming overshadowed by larger cities in the area. The proposed building aims to address these challenges by creating social spaces dedicated to hands-on learning in digital skills, encouraging collaboration, and facilitating networking. The project’s concept is a deliberate response to the environment, taking into consideration Stockport’s dynamic topography, the extensive demolition of older structures, as well as the site’s proximity to key civic buildings in the area. It aims to create a more inclusive and welcoming space that meets the needs of Stockport, ultimately striving to establish the town as an independent center for innovation.

3rd year CPU Atelier students embarked on building-scale projects, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the ‘chair to city’ context. The theme of ‘vocation and skills’ was explored, with a focus on Design, Systems, and Futures. Climate emergency and inclusivity were deeply considered in our projects. Students blended computational and analogue methods, creating diagrams and models to communicate their processes and outcomes. Critical thinking, data-driven design, and rigorous testing were at the core of their learning. CPU’s mantra encouraged experimentation, risk-taking, understanding rules to subvert them, and embracing change and collaboration, resulting in interesting projects.

This year’s site is located in the town on Stockport, south of Manchester. The region has a rich history of making, craft and vocational training. The project aims to was to propose a town centre facility to showcase, promote and nurture a digital craft and fabrication ecosystem, aiming to establish stockport’s reputation for innovation.

We cordially invite design practices to our Preview Event on Thursday, June 13th, beginning at 17:30 at the MSA Chatham Building. Join us to explore the innovative concepts and ideas developed by our students and discover the exceptional talent within the [CPU]ai atelier.
