Ninety-five-year-old artist Heinz Mack showed me around his incredible Ibizan home and sculpture garden for this weekend’s bumper @fthtsi design issue. It was such a pleasure to hear about his long career - from co-founding the Zero art movement in 1957 to the Chromatic Constellation paintings he made this year.
Every morning, he spends three hours in the studio, “to the minute”; then, after lunch and a nap, he does the same in the afternoon. “It’s a matter of discipline,” he says. “My production is so intensive. At my age, finally, I have to think about the question: what will happen to my work if I’m not around any more?” Free to read at the link in bio and in print today. Thank you for the story @a_r_t_communication, and for letting me write it @jellison22. Unbelievable pics by @danielschaeferstudio 💕 by @craftacularuk

Today, we celebrate friendship and creative encounters through this new story with photographer @francoiscoquerel and architect @bonnefoymarine. A few days ago, journalist Victoria Woodcock @craftacularuk took the time to chat with us all and captured the spirit of the moment perfectly for How to Spend It @fthtsi magazine.

You can still pick up your copy today if you haven’t already! @ft_weekend

We are particularly delighted to be mentioned alongside inspiring women in this issue, which marks International Women’s Day today! It’s a wonderful opportunity to think about all the women in our lives and those who have left us but remain close to our hearts.

We would like to dedicate this article to an exceptional woman who sadly left us far too soon after battling her illness for many years. Mum, we miss your presence, your kind heart, your smile and your fighting spirit every day. I wish we could still see your little heart emojis or comments under each of our posts (and love notes on my bed). We celebrate you every day.

To love and kindness 🩷

In the footsteps of Meret Oppenheim for this weekend’s @fthtsi… It was such a pleasure to speak with Lisa Wenger about her aunt, legendary surrealist artist Meret Oppenheim, and her creative enclave in the Swiss village of Carona, above Lake Lugano. The village and its artistic inhabitants – including David Weiss, one half of the Fischli and Weiss duo – are the subject of a fascinating museum show @masilugano. Thank you for the story @studionicolajeffs, and for the commission @louisquinze @rosiemayseed @jellison22 😘 Pics by @carmen_colombo ✨

“It was literally like being hit in the solar plexus when you went in,” says Thomas Boyd-Bowman, a senior director and head of evening sales at Sotheby’s London, of the eclectic, art-filled home of 81-year-old collector Pauline Karpidas. “Just mind-blowing, the quality of the pictures, the arrangement, the whole thing was extraordinary.”
The assemblage included works by Picasso, Picabia and Warhol; surrealist masterpieces by Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy and Dorothea Tanning; and fantastical furniture by Les Lalanne - and now it’s coming to Sotheby’s London next month. An exhibition (8 to 16 September) will be followed by an auction of 250 lots with a total estimate of more than £60mn — the highest price Sotheby’s has ever placed on a single-owner sale in Europe.
I wrote about it for @fthtsi, in print this weekend and online (link in bio). Thank you @bayasimons and @jellison22 for the lovely commission. Thank you @ob1london for the insight. ✨✨ by @craftacularuk

Ahead of his solo show opening @museeorsay, I spoke to artist @lucas_arruda_studio for @ft_houseandhome about his São Paulo home — a building he describes as “a modernist house, not signed by an important architect, but someone, for sure, who had a good vision”.

Over the past five years, Arruda has created a place of personal retreat for himself and Una — the stray dog he found in Sertão do Una, an area of rainforest in the north of São Paolo state, around the same time as he found the house. “Sometimes when I’m here, I don’t feel like I’m in Sao Paolo,” he says. “There’s more air; there is less noise.” It’s a space that in many ways echoes the ethereal paintings he has been creating since the early 2010s: small and intimate canvases, often only 30cm wide, infused with light and a sense of calm. Part figurative, part abstract, and wrought in a softly muted oil paint palette, they summon up cloudy skies, moody bodies of water and verdant landscapes. Yet moreover, says Arruda, they are visualisations of emotion and memory.

More ceramic loveliness in this weekend’s @ft_houseandhome… the Paris home of @saraidelfendahl, where everything from tiled splashbacks to lampshades and even cupboard handles have become part of her fantastical, hand-crafted clay universe.
“I have different phases with my work,” she explains. “There was a time when I was making only unicorns. Then I was doing lots of lions. Another time it was crabs.” Her recent exhibition @gallery_sceneouverte was dedicated to birds: “they can transport us and make us dream of somewhere else”. 📸 @alex_cretey_systermans. Thank you for the dreamiest of assignments @lucywwatson @beatricehodgkin @a_r_t_communication ✨ and for the inspiring tour @saraidelfendahl 😘 by @craftacularuk

LOVED writing about the chaotically creative collaboration between ceramic duo @feldsparstudio and artist @tanya_ling — and the very chic hand-painted porcelain tableware they have come up with together — for today’s @ft_houseandhome. The collection is launching on Thursday next week @lyndsey_ingram, coinciding with a solo show of Tanya’s work (pic four). Link in bio and in print today/tomorrow. Thank you @beatricehodgkin @e_hoppen 😘😘 by @craftacularuk

Thrilled to see Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme (my home town) in @fthtsi this weekend. The brilliant Sarah Watson, founder of bathware brand Balineum, has brought a tile-making factory there and with Phoenix Tile Studio founders Paul Gibson and Geoff Shaw is helping to keep this heritage industrial craft alive.
“Phoenix is, we believe, the last tile maker in the UK producing extruded, hand-cut tiles at any scale,” says Watson, “and the last tile maker in the UK who specialises in tubeline decoration. There are now so few of us left on the dancefloor, it’s in all of our interests to help preserve each other. The more people making tiles and working in ceramics, the better it is for everyone.” Link in bio to read online. The brilliant artist Paulina Olowska (@paolaorlowski) in this weekend’s @fthtsi! In September I went to the Polish town of Rabka-Zdrój to visit Artist House Kadenówka, the fairytale house that Olowska bought in 2009. “I didn’t choose this house; it kind of came to me. Rabka has all these amazing abandoned buildings – and I found this one.” She swiftly inaugurated the house with a group project called the Mycorial Theatre. “The roof was completely open. The house was completely haunted. Lightbulbs were smashing. People were screaming. And I had,” she laughs mischievously, “lots of mushrooms.”

Today @dom_tworczy_kadenowka is part heritage-preservation venture, part artist residency, part project space - and a completely enchanting homage to Polish art and craft. Link in bio to read 🧙‍♀️✨🪄

I’ve had a thing for St Ives ever since I visited the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden on a snowy day in the ‘90s. For @fthtsi this weekend I looked at the artists being drawn to this corner of Cornwall today - often to the amazing beachside @porthmeorstudios and its sister site, Anchor, in Newlyn. Thank you for your insights - and ice cream recommendations - @emmafineman @georg.kitty @_samuelbassett @raeyensong @ro_robertson_ @pamevelyn @abigailreynoldsartist. “People think Lucienne Day, and they think Calyx,” says Paula Day of her late mother, the revered British designer. In the 1950s, Lucienne shook up the world of textiles with her bold, Modernist prints. Calyx, an abstracted floral, was created for the Festival of Britain in 1951. Less well known, however, are the “silk mosaics” she started creating in the 1970s, which are now the subject of an exhibition at fashion designer Margaret Howell’s London Wigmore Street store. I loved writing about these amazing textile artworks for @ft_houseandhome. Link in bio; the exhibition is on till Nov 3.
