Available everywhere 5th December Following on from his triumphant return with the Akil The MC-assisted Take It Back, Planky fires off his next single with another stateside collaborator. Having immersed himself in the boom bap sound since the early days of his career, the UK producer and beatmaker knows exactly what goes into making a song that is reminiscent of eras past while still being grounded in the here and now. On his latest release, Take Risks, that method is executed to perfection. Combining the unmistakable energy of that hallowed 90’s era with an injection of a more contemporary vibe, the track stands tall in Planky’s burgeoning discography. Bridging that generational gap is the rising talent of Henry AZ, the L.A.-based rapper who has been making waves as part of Juicy J’s Mo Faces label. Bestowed with a quick-fire flow and intricate rhyme-schemes, Henry AZ proves to be the prime candidate for Planky’s production, effortlessly lacing the beat with enough punchlines and wordplay to fill a whole EP. From the commanding refrain (“I take risks, yeah I really had to take risks / That’s why I’m not the kinda guy you really wanna play with”), Henry sets the tone and underpins the track with the sentiment that he is not here to play. The production also leans into this vibe, packing a punch and moving with the same vibrancy of Henry’s flow. Horns stab through while an appropriately placed vocal sample is looped to perfection. All of this adds up to a compelling banger, that showcases the best of what both artists have to offer. “Take It Back”is available to stream and download everywhere from 7th November and is fronted by a formidable feature from Jurassic 5 veteran, Akil The MC and UK singer/songwriter Maddy. Akil and the rest of his lauded crew were a major proponent of boom bap during the 90’s and that same infectious energy is very much present on Take It Back. Further lyrical nourishment is found in the backing vocals, which come courtesy of fellow UK artist Maddy. Her soulful and mellow sound is the ideal counterpart for Akil’s brand of lyricism, bringing the necessary final ingredient to this nostalgic celebration. This is one for the older heads who yearn for a trip down memory lane, as well as any listeners from the new generation who want a taste of a defining point in musical history.
