Turkey 03. Today in Pamukkale, with vast zones dried up due to tourist exploitation of the natural mineral springs that historically allowed the ancient city of Hierapolis to thrive, I wish I had taken a photograh of an overweight, sunburnt, heavily-tattooed man sporting a butt-crack above his swimsuit declaring CALVIN KLEIN for all to see.

Weddings are alive and well in Turkey and deserve a more glamorous photo than the somewhat melancholy one here.

Was hubris the Achilles' tendon of Antiquity?

Despite everything, bees still manage to produce the honey on our breakfast table. In Bergama, the 3rd generation of beekeepers let us try some in his shop, from lavender, from pine.

Turkey 01, Edirne, founded as a Thracian settlement, rebuilt as Roman Hadrianopolis, served as the capital of the Ottoman Empire prior to the conquest of Constantinople. Adorned with masterpieces like the Selimiye Mosque (photo 6 & 9) designed by Mimar Sinan between 1568-1575.

Hurtling down the Six Flags Magic Mountain rollercoaster (notice person's arm raised in background) on April 30, 1983, the day Bow Wow Wow played. My dear friend, Michel Cicero, souped up the photo for a postcard she sent me in Barcelona 8 Aprils later rightly bragging about being the bassist for an all-girl thrash band (Woodpussy). Michel, te quiero y te echo de menos. Shine on, you crazy diamond.

As a high school teacher, I introduce PRIDE MONTH by telling my students that if, just maybe if, there are any HETEROsexuals in the class, that it's OK, that maybe one day you'll be able to talk to your parents, tell them "Mom, Dad, (long pause) I'm straight." Students chuckle a bit here. Then I tell them, "Flip that over. That's the BULLSHIT that we grow up listening to."

Our annual pride month mural is hetero-friendly.
