Saturday was all about food, culture, traditions and bringing people together at “Dishes from Different Eastern European Countries – Make & Try” and “I Come from POTATOES” in Leicester. 🥔❤️

I spent the day capturing two events at The Green Space, celebrating the Eastern European communities who call Leicester home and the stories, memories and traditions they bring with them 🫶🏻

There was so much going on throughout the day, from cooking and trying traditional dishes like Latvian sorrel soup, Lithuanian cepelinai and Polish pierogi 🥟 to tasting traditional potato pancakes, sharing stories, getting creative with potato printing and harvest crafts and even enjoying some Latvian dancing 🇱🇻💃

And as a Polish girl myself, I especially loved seeing pierogi 🥟 being made and hearing the stories behind the food and traditions that many of us grew up with 🇵🇱❤️

What I really enjoyed was seeing everyone coming together, sharing their cultures and memories and showing how food and traditions can travel with us and evolve when we make a new home 🏠

It was such a lovely celebration of Leicester’s diverse heritage and Eastern European communities. 🇵🇱🇱🇹🇱🇻

I believe heritage projects can help people develop a stronger sense of belonging, identity and connection to the city. They can also help build a better future by increasing understanding between communities, challenging stereotypes and ensuring that future generations feel proud of both their cultural roots and their place in Leicester.
I want to explore how Eastern European communities have shaped Leicester and how their stories can become a more visible part of the city’s shared heritage. If you have roots in Eastern Europe and would like to get involved, I would love to hear from you."

As part of Folk Crafts & Rhythms, Andrea shared the beautiful tradition of Slovak Easter egg decoration 🎨🥚

A big thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who added to the experience by introducing the traditional Baltic way of dyeing eggs, dancing and swinging.🌿✨

We loved the charming superstition shared by Sigita from Latvia — don’t forget to swing at Easter to keep mosquitoes away all summer! 🌸🦟

Our much-awaited Folk Crafts & Rhythms event is coming soon, alongside many other Easter activities (find out more on our website).

Folk Crafts & Rhythms were warmly welcomed at the Guildhall Museum with @KarolinaWęgrzyn and the vibrant sounds of traditional Polish folk music 🎶

We explored the role of the wodzirej (wedding host), who traditionally leads the wedding party into the celebration with a walking dance (chodzony). Setting the rhythm and calling out simple steps, the wodzirej invites guests to follow in pairs, weaving through the space and symbolically welcoming everyone into the shared celebration. It’s often one of the very first moments of a Polish wedding — breaking formality, bringing generations together, and setting a joyful, inclusive tone for the day. And yes… we did try the dance ourselves ✨

Staying true to the theme, our favourite Polish symbol of the day was the rooster (kogut) 🐓 — a powerful folk symbol of vitality, protection, fertility, and warding off evil spirits. Inspired by this, we worked with rich, bold colours and created our own rooster wycinanki using traditional Polish paper-cutting techniques ✂️

A beautiful blend of rhythm, symbolism, and creativity 💛
