If you can't explain it in a minute, you probably shouldn't own it.

Most portfolios grow by accident. A fund here, a tip from a friend there, something that looked cheap three years ago and never got looked at again. Then one day the market wobbles and you realise you can't say why half of it is there.

At Cranstoun the rule is simple. Every position has to earn its place in plain English: what the business does, why it makes money, and what would make us wrong. The mandate is global equities, mostly North American, with a Eurobond sleeve alongside. Fewer holdings, each one understood properly.

That is not a clever trick. It is just what makes it possible to sit still when everyone else is reacting. You can only hold on through a bad month if you know exactly what you are holding.

The most powerful force in investing is also the dullest one.

It's compounding. Your money earns a return. Then that return earns its own return. Year one barely moves. Year twenty looks like magic.

The catch is that it only works if you leave it alone. Every panic sale, every jump to the next hot thing, resets the clock. Most of the growth happens late, so the people who do best are often the ones who did the least.

That's why patience isn't a mood for us, it's the strategy. Own good companies, let them keep reinvesting, and give the maths the time it needs. That's what "Expanding horizons" really means.

Sixteen to twenty names. That's the whole book.

People expect a fund to own hundreds of things. We don't. Every position has to earn its place, and if it can't beat something already in the portfolio, it doesn't get in.

Concentration gets called risky. We see it the other way round. You can't know two hundred companies well. You can know twenty. Conviction is only worth anything when you've done the work to back it.

That's what "Expanding horizons" means to us. Not owning everything. Owning the right things, across the world, with the patience to wait.
