Listen to the mustn’ts
By shel silverstein

Listen to the mustn’ts, child. Listen to the don’ts.
Listen to the shouldn’ts, the impossibles, the won’ts.
Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me... Anything can happen, child.
Anything can be.

Happy Birthday CC!!

Honeypot of hope
( or Dragons do exist, be one)

In your childhood heart
Honeypot of hope
Can you recall when you couldn’t find the words
But you still brought sunshine
And filled voids for others
Filling a void for yourself

Entwining collisions
Part of your daily spin
Spirited the world watched
As they became
Part of us

We are beauty seekers
Wakers of hope
Legacy keepers
Of humanity
Of us

Be with us
Otherwise you devour
Your offspring
You kill yourself while you could
Immortalize
That which your mother gave you
Life
Yet more

A life that gives love
A love that gives life

Dreams
By Langston Hughes

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

Berryman
BY W. S. MERWIN

I will tell you what he told me
in the years just after the war
as we then called
the second world war

don’t lose your arrogance yet he said
you can do that when you’re older
lose it too soon and you may
merely replace it with vanity

just one time he suggested
changing the usual order
of the same words in a line of verse
why point out a thing twice

he suggested I pray to the Muse
get down on my knees and pray
right there in the corner and he
said he meant it literally

it was in the days before the beard
and the drink but he was deep
in tides of his own through which he sailed
chin sideways and head tilted like a tacking sloop

he was far older than the dates allowed for
much older than I was he was in his thirties
he snapped down his nose with an accent
I think he had affected in England

as for publishing he advised me
to paper my wall with rejection slips
his lips and the bones of his long fingers trembled
with the vehemence of his views about poetry

he said the great presence
that permitted everything and transmuted it
in poetry was passion
passion was genius and he praised movement and invention

I had hardly begun to read
I asked how can you ever be sure
that what you write is really
any good at all and he said you can’t

you can’t you can never be sure
you die without knowing
whether anything you wrote was any good
if you have to be sure don’t write

GROUND ZERO; a Double -Take.
By David Vickers

Steel fingers rise up from the ground, accusing, to the sky.
The awesome site its vigil keeps, and begs the question- why?
The image, now imprinted deep, we cannot help recall,
When prompted by a daunting phrase, now known to one and all;

Ground Zero.

Familiar in the building trade, it’s been around for years,
in common use by architects and civil engineers. But now it strikes a different chord, with overtones of pain,
With sorrow it’s been laden, and long it will remain. Yet as you stand in sadness here, or weep for those who died,
reflect on this, then raise your eyes, and fill your heart with pride; For in this place, upon that day, let history attest,
humanity both plumbed its depths, and reached its shining best.
Think now of those who gave their all, what bravery was there?
That kind of courage lives in few, and comes from... who knows where?
Remember ‘New York’s Finest,’ and the sacrifice they made,
“Better love hath no man ...”
‘ but what a price they paid. “It’s just the job, it’s what we do; we take the call and go
I’m not so very different, just an “Ordinary Joe.” (?) But history has long conspired to have the final word
to put things in perspective, (and its obvious, once heard). That word should be on granite, a tribute to the bold,
Writ large by every “Brother’s” name, with letters chased in gold.
So listen close, and mark the sound, next time you hear “Ground Zero,”
Repeat it, loud, and all around,
You’ll hear an echo;

“Hero.”

God Bless America
Home of the Free
Because of the Brave

What We Need Is Here

Geese appear high over us,
pass, and the sky closes. Abandon,
as in love or sleep, holds
them to their way, clear
in the ancient faith: what we need
is here. And we pray, not
for new earth or heaven, but to be
quiet in heart, and in eye,
clear. What we need is here

These Hands On Days
(Revolution #1)
[8/28/26]

These hands on days
folding up
but not in some neat,
tidy,
organized way

but summer slowly
folds into
itself
and away from itself

summer school soon over
and all the lessons
did they settle in or were they lost
in the hazy days

learned or spurned,
allowed to drift on

like the river james,
rolling slowly round
them pony pastures
roaming the shores of belle island

the abyss of an august night
where you learned
new found love of yourself
the song you hummed
a star that euthanized a fear

 a crazy
long road trip
bred a calm and
an eye for developing joys

these hands on days
ignited verdant energy
brought you closer to
your own meaning

As these summer revelries
come to a close
and we head back to the
to the constructs of humanity(?)

a lone cricket battles the silence
From a looming willow oak

Nothing Gold Can Stay
Robert Frost

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf,
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day
Nothing gold can stay.

Silent summer mornings
Revel in interspersed
crow calls
Soft under murmurs of
early morn cicada
Tree cover allows
 freedom awakes

Push you do
Off and into
A very up in newness
new day
High sheen gloss of promise

Refelcts in the dew
The noise that comes out
Of the silence

But I being of sound mind
Break out a gracious lecture
Served to myself
Along a tall tall cup of black coffee
That stains
My thoughts with jitters

And off goes you without
In no need,
you are freed
To drink of the moment
Imbibe

While I
Deep in the distance
Ideas of tomorrow start
To perculate
Large looming
Larger than life sized

And yet you still have so much
More
You still have today
