Sea Otter at the WeatherTech/ Mission Tortilla/ Porsche Raceway is always a blur.Somewhere between the racing, the heat, the noise— there’s everything else.Hands passing bottles. Someone frantically fixing something with 5 seconds before their race starts. A pile of something that shouldn’t be there, but is. Conversations you miss until you don’t.Not the booths. Not the branding. Just people, bikes, and a dash of chaos. That’s the part I can’t look away from.Been building something quietly in the middle of it. Preorders are open for a few more days. #hereliesgabe #katweforgottowearmustaches by @crawleysoftpen

Feels a little odd talking about and posting this project as I had nearly nothing to do with it— what’s true is that I date the guy that does the real good paint work, I have a BFA in printmaking (screen print, specifically), and I spent 80% of the time it took to get this done in the room with @goodcolorstudio (lots and lots of late hours after full days of work). I could say I was project manager, though that likely/ realistically is Josh. All I know is, I got to work alongside James during the late hours of the evening— mixing paint (that’s actually lowk hard), masking the beautifully loose artwork provided by the wonderfully talented @bryancouchman , printing and weeding the masking, and going on beer/ dinner runs while James sprayed in the booth. Feels like nothing, but my body knows from the time spent that I was there doing SOMEthing. I hadn’t been able to work with James on any paint projects yet— we’ve been together 3 years, and for some reason we just haven’t been able to carve out the time to paint together. I learned a ton from him, and since we started with something SO insanely complex— I have the false sense that anything we paint afterwards will be very easy. This sounds stupid— but I’ve been obsessed with paint from a young age— I remember discovering Troy Lee in high school and thinking, shit, there’s legit ART in motocross. Years later, when I eventually worked at TLD, I would wander downstairs and ask inane questions to the painters working on helmets, envious of the apprentices sanding for 8 hours a day (James is screaming internally at this sentence— he hates sanding). I really just love the way that art meanders its way through our sport— from kit, to bike, to ever-so-specifically placed thigh tattoos (visible right along the border of one’s bibs— ahem, my barbed wire strand)— that’s the stuff that gets me excited about bikes. Well, at least a large part of it. Thanks for having us do this, @midsouthgravel — it was real hard, and we tried our best— I think it came out pretty nice <3 by @crawleysoftpen

Yes, I am posting everything at once, thank you so much for noticing 🥰Now, what can we even say about the #yamily? It’s a family… centered around a yam named Sam. It makes sense, right? 😈The lot of us had at least one prior MidSouth under our belts— so this was more of a reunion tour than anything else. I don’t know that we could have picked a better crew— these have been some of (most of) my dearest friends over the last 5 years— Doug, Megan, Kat, Bree, Evan, Wade, and myself all piled into one Airbnb. I’m struggling to really articulate how much fun we all had— Doug’s dedication to Sam the Yam, I guess also Kat’s because her 3rd place women’s podi-yam speech was unhinged (incredible no notes), Bree and Nyx bounding around joyfully, Megan and Wade lovingly caring for little Roo— slinging their wares, and Evan, we don’t know what Evan was doing but it was great— probably coming up with some quick witted, meme based comment that would send most of us into a cackle. This shit is important. Spending time with people you care about and tackling an event together is something I truly love— the magic of the shared experience. Again, I can’t really explain it— but look at these images and videos, and you might begin to understand. by @crawleysoftpen

MidSouth is this funny sort of special for me— I remember watching from my little room during grad school in Colorado, I hadn’t yet had the guts to really interact with much of the cycling community— outside of random cheeky instagram tags.I was particularly drawn to those ridiculously muddy years of MidSouth (formerly the Land Run 100)— y’all remember those? That year the pros made it all of 12 miles and their bikes exploded? I loved the absolute dedication and subsequent carnage of it all. In 2019, I moved to California and started leaning into The Culture™️— this was only accentuated by the pandemic, where my chronically online ass had access to all of you— stuck at home and wondering wtf was going on— premium prey for my nonsense antics. During this time I made good friends with @clare.paniccia who literally SCREAMED the praises of this Oklahoma town that I had never heard of. She’s the one that got me to make my first pilgrimage to Stillwater. Upon arrival, I was introduced to the crew in a whirlwind of faces, thrown headlong into the back of @osucycler’s 4Runner and carted off to god knows where— screaming down a red dirt road, chasing the pro women’s group.I’ve taken drugs (perhaps not the super good ones) and this was frankly better than any I’d yet to try— imagine being on a rollercoaster, on a safari, where your main objective is to get not-so-shitty images of folks with boogers, tears, mud and occasionally blood plastered to their faces. Without sarcasm, what could be better? I was hooked. This was all I wanted to do. 5(?) years later, after 3 or 4 trips to Oklahoma— 2026 rolled into view. I wasn’t there to work, make contacts, hustle— I was there as a supporting cast member to my closest friends from across the country. While some small, still-healing part of me was disappointed that I hadn’t managed to secure some type of financial offset for this seemingly gluttonous adventure, the other wolf inside of me said, fuck it, we ball and embraced my #yamily with arms wide open. To be continued, maybe. I’m flaky re: my own art.#gravel #4trsh #midsouth by @crawleysoftpen

Lots to say about this project— but I’ll try to be concise. Last year, Pearl went through some structural changes that left me without my consistent contract gig that I’ve held (mostly) for 4+ years now. That sucked, and led me to question what I’m even doing anymore— I’ve been designing cycling kits (my dream job, or at least it was in college) for 10 years now. A friggin’ decade of my life spent drawing on stretchy pants for you lot. I considered getting into local politics, quickly realizing that the grassroots, honest approach I wanted to take was not something I would ever have the energy for, particularly in such an affluent area (SANTA BARBARA, WHAT UP?!)I considered working for the National Forest, I considered becoming a bartender, a waitress, a teacher— all these possibilities of how I could spend my time on this earth. Mid-existential crisis— @gaberiveraaa was like, oh we need kit for Hannah Otto, you got time? Yes. Yes, I have all the time in the world, blud. And thus, we started the journey that was/ is the 2026 Pearl Izumi Athlete Kit design marathon. I don’t know a ton about the ins and outs of the @envemogsquad deal— but I do know I’m really proud that I got to be a TINY part of helping this team look fly as hell. I’m really grateful for the opportunity to keep building artwork on lycra— grateful that I get to keep chugging along this way. Have a great season, MOG Squad bb’s— have the most fun!📸: @simon_krenk (thank you, beautiful images!) by @crawleysoftpen

I can’t announce anything other than that I’m finally starting to feel human again after a few years of intensity surrounding home, finances, relationships, and health (everything?)— while things aren’t totally resolved, I’m feeling my energy slowly returning. The trick now is to capitalize on that energy in a sustainable and enjoyable manner (I tend to flame out pretty quickly, perceiving that I may never feel good again and must get all activities in in one big push…) Here’s to a healthy, productive, and maybe FUN (?!?!) 2026— to momentum instead of stagnation and floundering. Wouldn’t that be a lovely change of pace? Here’s a portrait from @midsouthgravel 2022— a place and time where I felt most energized and myself. This was after spending the day in the back of a 4Runner, chasing athletes all over Stillwater— red dirt in my teeth, eyes, and probably every crevice. 🩵 by @crawleysoftpen
