There has been many recent debates and conversations on who was the very first to create the very first ‘Grime’ track during the transitional stage of the UK Garage sound and of course, this is all subjective as there was multiple producers during the late 90’s and early 00’s who either was experimenting in bedroom studios or creating some of the most innovative tracks by accident – Whichever way you want to look at it, it is absolutely undeniable that North West London Legend Daryl Nurse aka Youngstar (Formally of Musical Mob Royale) changed the game and solidified a change of trajectory with ‘Pulse X which first hit the scene Circa 2001 in and around the pirate radio and club scenes of the UK Garage community. With a full release first coming out on Inspired Sounds Records in 2002, [ Reported to have sold well over 20,000 units ] Pulse X spearheaded a change of sonic fantasy, displaying outrageous distorted 808’s as well as stripping down the usual arrangement style which also led to what many called the 8-Bar sound, this was typically down to simplicity of Pulse X’s music arrangement to which many forward-thinking producers inherited into a sound of their own, this was also a loud and blatant catalyst for MCs to have more space to express their forward-thinking lyrical cadences that eventually led towards the sound and culture of what we call Grime today. After leaving Musical Mob in 2002, Daryl Nurse aka Youngstar went on to set up his own imprint DDJ’s productions releasing tracks like ‘The Formula’ / ‘Bongo’ , but by this time, the masses had an idea of what to expect Youngstar who went on a generational run of releases with DDJ’s Productions during the entirety of the 00’s (Also combatting an ungodly number of bootlegs that was infiltrating underground record stores at the time) and regularly appearing on pirate radio stations such as Lush FM 107.6, React FM 99.7 and other various pirate radio stations broadcasting in and around the West / North West London area during the early to mid 00’s. Youngstar also gave Dizzee Rascal his very first UK National top ten hit with ‘’Stand Up Tall’’ back in 2004 - Youngstar is a true pioneer of the underground by @crch.official

One of Dubstep’s foundational and pioneering DJ’s, Mark Newton, or better known as N-Type, Newton has spent the last 25 years dedicating his life to pushing the Dubstep sound globally from humble beginnings broadcasting on south west London’s seminal pirate radio station Delight FM 103.0 alongside his original b2b partner DJ Walsh, eventually moving over to Rinse FM 100.3 in 2003, the then pirate station turned into the legal Rinse FM 106.8, a transition that saw N-Type become one of the stations longest serving broadcasters across 3 decades. In 2020, N-Type joined forces with Croydub & DMZ legend, SGT Pokes to found the Pirate Copy Podcast which has become a regular show on Bristolʼs SWU FM 103.7 which takes place live at the recent success story, Riff Raff’s located in the heart of Croydon, the original home of the Dubstep sound.
