#nataliaortegagamez calls herself a Caribbean gardener. She keeps a garden of herbs and medicinal plants in Santo Domingo, she can tell you which species on Hispaniola exist nowhere else, and she talks about the island’s trees and palms and vines as usable resources rather than scenery.

That is where these objects come from. Coconut palm rib, bound at the handle in cord, in greens and yellows going to orange and red, or in purple and magenta. They hang from stands she built, which is what happens when someone trained in furniture design starts working with weavers.

These pieces belong to “Disciplina”, the series @creadora has been building since 2017 inspired by weavers in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

“Disciplina” began in the workshop of Tulito, an artist and barber who showed #nataliaortegagamez a flyswatter woven from the midrib of the coconut palm leaf, a technique he had learned in Haiti from a man who learned it in Jamaica. He made five azotadores for her platform “Los Tejedores” and died days later; in 2019 @creadora wove her first set and has continued the form ever since.

Rendered in natural fibers from the artist’s surroundings, these objects move from domestic tool to sculptural language, addressing power and submission, the punisher and the punished. Their title carries a double charge, naming both correction and the sustained rigor of the hand. Belonging to an Antillean lineage shared by Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, Disciplina gives form to a condition the artist names directly: to be from the Caribbean is to feel perpetually lashed.

Details:
Disciplina de mesa, 2026
Coconut palm rib, nylon paracord, rattan, and wicker.
16 in. W × 23 in. H
21 pieces and 1 stand.

This piece will be part of our booth at @thearmoryshow booth F3, Sept 24-27 at the Javits Center, NY. taken in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic by @creadora

🌀🌀🌀🌀 taken in Zona colonial by @creadora

Inside #nataliaortegagamez Santo Domingo studio we observe the art of the material. Her work moves through the material vocabularies of craft: clay, fiber, woven structure — treating each as a carrier of cultural history expanding from a raw substance to be shaped. Ongoing research into traditional weaving practices across the Dominican Republic and Haiti continues to anchor @creadora process.

Natalia Ortega Gámez’ work begins in material research rather than image-making. @creadora treats clay, bamboo, and natural fiber as historical documents, tracing how traditional weaving techniques move across the Dominican-Haitian border despite the political line drawn between the two countries. The process of gathering, testing, and working alongside artisans functions as the investigation itself rather than a preparation.

That inquiry sharpens in pieces like “Disciplina” which draws on this research, arriving at a piece that reimagines the azotador, the whip, as a domestic object with two uses: fly-swatter and object of desire. It belongs to a series of the same name that turns on power and submission, on the punished and the one who punishes, treating the condition of being Caribbean as a condition of being perpetually struck.

INTRODUCING | Natalia Ortega Gámez

Natalia Ortega Gámez (b. 1980, Santo Domingo) is a Dominican artist and designer whose practice moves between craft, sculpture, and installation. Living and working in Santo Domingo, her research centers on artisanal processes and the natural materials: fibers, clay, bamboo, palm leaf that carry the memory and daily life of Dominican and Caribbean culture. Her work addresses themes ranging from humor and sexuality to climate and the human condition, treating art as both personal expression and a space of encounter between self and other.

@creadora trained at Altos de Chavón La Escuela de Diseño, earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Product Design from Parsons School of Design in New York, and later studied at the Université Panthéon-Sorbonne in Paris. These years across design and fine arts disciplines shaped an interdisciplinary practice that resists easy categorization. Central to her work is Los Tejedores, the platform she co-directs with musician Ricardo Ariel Toribio, which brings her into sustained collaboration with Dominican and Haitian weavers: elevating traditional textile techniques into a contemporary language rooted in Hispaniola’s shared material culture.

Her work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including the Art Museum of the Americas (Washington D.C.), De Appel (Amsterdam), the II and III Bienal Iberoamericana de Diseño (Madrid), and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico, among others. In 2016, she was the inaugural artist selected for the Davidoff Art Initiative residency at Flora Ars+Natura in Bogotá, Colombia. Her work is held in the collections of the Centro León Jiménez (Santiago), the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico, the Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín, and the Art in Embassies Program of the U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo.
