Layers on Layers.
This is so calming to paint.

Using a heat gun helps big time for layering watercolors. If you don't have a drying tool, you can use a hairdryer on heat mode.

Once you have your 5 or 6 drops of heavy color on the paper, use a clean brush with lots of water to spread the color to form a petal. Continue to make all 5.

After the 5 petal layer is dry, add new petals in between the other layers that are already dry. Use a very light wash of the same color to make more petals.

This turned out so different than what I expected- the dryer tool pushed the extra water all over the place but it ended up looking beautiful anyway . It ended up looking like a pressed, dried flower.

Be sure to leave some white space in the center of your flower, where the petals meet.

Follow for more fun, easy projects 💡

Showing leaves in perspective or folded over...

Don't know about you, but this is one thing that I had to learn my own way- other artists make it look so easy.

Once you have your shape down using a light green color, here I am using sap green mix with olive green. Once that dries a bit, I will go in with my perylene green and paint the underside of the leaf, depending where you want it to bend --either towards you or away from you.

Hope this little tutorial helps you understand an easier way of seeing it from the start...

So inspired by this artist @sarahblomfieldstudio and the way she paints geraniums. Had to try it for myself and added a little garden friend...

Simple, lots of white space - stems and flowers spread far apart.

So beautiful!

🌸🐿️ Tiny garden visitor, big watercolor magic. I painted this charming chipmunk discovering a pot of blooming geraniums.

This little chipmunk took much longer to paint than I expected. 🐿️

I worked through many layers to create the look and texture of fur, especially around the eyes where I struggled to get the white highlights just right. His face has more layers of paint than I’d like to admit!

Unfortunately, I didn’t record the process because I was so focused on getting it right. 😝

Sometimes the most challenging paintings are the ones that teach us the most.

✨ Would you stop and watch this little visitor?

🌸 The Flower Center Changes Everything
➡️ Paint Toward the Center. Align the Stem. 🎨✨

🌸 The Secret to Painting Flowers That Actually Look Real

Most beginners focus on painting petals.

Experienced artists focus on the center.

Before your brush touches the paper, decide where your flower is facing. Every petal should visually flow toward the center of the bloom, no matter the angle.

➡️ Pink arrows show the brushstroke direction moving toward the flower’s center.

🔵 Blue arrows show stem alignment. The stem should connect naturally to the center of the flower’s structure—not randomly attach underneath. When the center and stem align, your flowers instantly feel more believable, dimensional, and alive.

Notice how this works from every angle:
🌸 Front view
🌸 Side view
🌸 Looking down
🌸 Looking up
🌸 Flower turning away
🌸 Flower nodding downward

Once you understand the relationship between the center, petals, and stem, painting flowers becomes much easier.

✨ Why Painting from Real Flowers Changes Everything 🌻

There’s something magical about studying every curve, shadow, and imperfect petal right in front of you. Real flowers teach you things a reference photo never can—the way light dances across the petals, the subtle color shifts, and the natural movement that brings a painting to life.

These sunflowers were painted from life, one brushstroke at a time. Watching them closely helped me loosen up, paint more intuitively, and capture their personality instead of just copying what I saw.

Do you paint from real flowers, photos, or a little of both? Let me know below! 👇

Six Reasons I Use the Cheapest Paper I Can Find (Sometimes!)

As watercolor artists, we often hear that paper is the most important supply—and honestly, I agree. Good watercolor paper can make a huge difference in how your paint behaves. But if you’re just starting out, I don’t think expensive paper should stop you from painting.

When I was learning, I discovered that regular sketch paper and inexpensive watercolor paper still had value. They gave me a place to practice, experiment, and build confidence without worrying about “wasting” expensive materials.

Here are a few reasons why I think beginner artists can benefit from using affordable paper:

🎨 1. You can paint more often.
When each sheet costs pennies instead of dollars, you’re more willing to practice every day.

🎨 2. It removes the fear of making mistakes.
Some of my best lessons came from paintings that didn’t work out. Cheap paper makes it easier to take risks.

🎨 3. You can focus on brush control.
Learning thin lines, thick lines, leaves, petals, and simple strokes doesn’t require the most expensive paper.

🎨 4. Tutorials become more affordable.
You can follow YouTube tutorials and online classes without worrying about using up your “good” paper.

🎨 5. You can build your supplies gradually.
If your budget is limited, I would invest first in good watercolor brushes. Next, invest in quality watercolor paints. Good paints last a surprisingly long time.

🎨 6. You learn what you really need.
As your skills grow, you’ll better understand why watercolor paper matters and which paper works best for your style.

Watercolor paper is absolutely important, but so are brushes and pigments. If you’re just beginning, don’t feel like you need to buy everything at once. Start with what you can afford. Practice your brushwork, learn how your paints behave, and build your supplies over time.

A sketchbook, regular sketch paper, or inexpensive watercolor paper can be the perfect place to learn. Then, when you’re ready, invest in higher-quality watercolor paper and enjoy the difference it makes.

The most important thing isn’t the paper—it’s showing up and painting.

One of the biggest lessons in watercolor: effortless-looking paintings are rarely effortless.

This Golden Wattle was inspired by Sushma Hegde’s beautiful work. Trying to capture her loose brushwork reminded me how much skill, patience, and practice goes into creating paintings that feel simple.

Recycle to Create

Next time you unbox a delivery, do you see that Amazon paper envelope or crinkled packing paper as waste—or as untapped creative potential waiting to come alive? 🎨✨

I see a blank canvas.

Instead of tossing it into the recycling bin, try transforming it into beautiful art. The natural texture of packing paper creates unique effects for watercolor, mixed media, sketches, and creative experiments you can’t get on traditional paper.

For this type of paper, which is darker and thicker, I prefer using gouache because it provides strong, opaque coverage.

Acrylic paint and acrylic paint markers work well too. In general, any medium with good opacity will show up beautifully on the surface.

Traditional watercolor may not be the best choice since the paper color can affect the vibrancy of the paint, but it’s still worth experimenting with to see what effects you can create.

♻️ Reduce waste
🎨 Create something beautiful
📦 Give packaging a second life

Sometimes the most inspiring art supplies are already sitting in your delivery box.

Would you paint on recycled packing paper?

Sharing some of my favorite watercolor and content creation setup hacks! 🎨✨

One of the best upgrades to my workspace has been using a butcher block as my tabletop. The size you choose will depend on your available space and the size of your desk. They come in a variety of sizes and finishes, and I found mine at Home Depot.

For my watercolor mixing surface, I use a thick white porcelain tile with a glossy finish. I believe it’s actually a floor tile because it’s much thicker than a standard wall tile. I recommend choosing white because it allows you to see your color mixes accurately, just like a traditional watercolor palette. The glossy surface is also easy to clean with nothing more than water.

Another favorite hack is using a large spray bottle to activate my watercolor paints. It holds plenty of water, so I’m not constantly stopping to refill it. For travel, I switch to a small spray bottle that fits easily into my art bag.

When it comes to filming, I prefer keeping my light and phone mount separate. This gives me more flexibility since I often need my light positioned closer to my artwork than my phone.

I also keep brushes, markers, and pencils in separate containers. It makes finding the right tool much easier and helps keep my workspace organized.

Don’t forget to keep chargers nearby! If you’re creating content, a low battery can interrupt your workflow at the worst possible time.

A comfortable chair is another must-have. Many of us spend hours painting, filming, and editing, so good support for your back, legs, and posture is incredibly important.

Most importantly, keep your workspace clean and organized. A tidy, inviting creative space makes you want to sit down and paint. It may seem simple, but it can have a big impact on your creativity and productivity.

Painting from live lavender stems and flowers is one of my favorite ways to slow down, observe, and connect with nature. 💜

Here are 5 reasons to paint from live flowers and plants:

✨ 1. See true colors and natural light
Fresh lavender reveals beautiful color shifts and subtle details that photos often miss.

✨ 2. Strengthen your observation skills
Painting from life helps train your eye to notice shape, texture, proportion, and detail.

✨ 3. Enjoy a calming sensory experience
The soothing fragrance of lavender creates a peaceful atmosphere that encourages creativity and focus.

✨ 4. Capture natural movement and character
Every stem bends, twists, and grows differently, adding life and authenticity to your artwork.

✨ 5. Deepen your connection with nature
Taking time to study live flowers encourages mindfulness and appreciation for the beauty around us.

Have you ever painted from fresh flowers instead of a photo? Let me know in the comments! 🌿🎨

I pre-mixed my two different purples into little puddles before starting to paint by - this way I have them already mixed and ready instead of painting directly from the pan.
