The day didn’t end there… We wrapped up the tour with a practical workshop at @elevateher_space_ , where @ad_maihoto and @rabioukabeer took us through the fundamentals of storytelling and the ethical process of documenting people and communities.

We also had some fun activities, connected with one another, shared experiences, and finally called it a day.

It was such a long day, full of activities, learning, laughter, and memories, and honestly, one that was worth being part of. 🤍

This is just the beginning, Insha Allah.

To all the participants, thank you for your time, commitment, and energy. Your presence made the experience even more meaningful. ❤️

On 20th September, we decided to leave the classroom and take our learning to the streets.

The Media & Storytelling Cluster headed by @maryam._dauda & @rabioukabeer visited the ancient Kurmi Market to experience storytelling firsthand and learn directly from the people, history, and everyday activities of the market.

It was such an impactful experience, made even more meaningful by our guides, @ad_maihoto and @_agidi_ . We gained so much knowledge about the history, activities, and stories behind Kurmi Market. We also had the opportunity to meet the Chairman of the Market Organization, Malam Sulaiman, who shared valuable insights with us.

It was a long day, but one filled with learning, experiences, connections, and memories.

This is only the beginning of what we hope to achieve together as a cluster.

Long before Kurmi Market became famed for its aromatic trades, its grounds held a darker history as a central site of human captivity and the slave trade. As colonization reshaped the region and the trade in human lives was abolished, the market underwent a slow transformation, evolving from a place of bondage into a vibrant hub for local craft and commerce.

Today, that history lives beneath the daily rhythm of labor. Deep within its passages, workers spend their days breaking down heavy timber into the precise wooden chips used to craft turaren wuta, the traditional incense whose fragrance fills the air. On the very grounds where human freedom was once bought and sold, the community now turns raw timber into warmth, fragrance, and livelihood.

I went on a photo walk through the ancient Kurmi Market with @creative_corner_community and I left with more than just photographs.

I learnt about the history of the market, its people and the generations of skill that have kept these crafts alive. I saw, in a different way, the significance of aikin hannu and how craftsmanship has shaped the history, traditions and identity of my culture.

It made me think about our hands as an inheritance. An asset our ancestors held on to, mastered and passed down from one generation to another.

Every craft carries a story. Every pair of hands carries a piece of history.

And in Kurmi, I got to see that history still living.
