MATCHBOX MB181 Mercedes-Benz 300E custom

Introduced in 1984, the W124 Mercedes-Benz combined exceptional engineering, timeless styling and legendary durability, earning a reputation as one of Mercedes-Benz’s greatest achievements. But for some enthusiasts, the W124 alone wasn’t enough...

Enter AMG.

Long before becoming Mercedes-Benz’s official performance division, AMG was an independent tuning company founded in 1967. During the 1980s, AMG became famous for transforming sensible Mercedes saloons into outrageous high-performance machines. Their most legendary creation was the fearsome “Der Hammer”, a W124 fitted with a hand-built 5.0-litre V8 transplanted from the larger W126 S-Class. The result was one of the fastest four-door cars in the world and a machine that helped establish AMG’s reputation forever. Smaller-engined variants, often nicknamed “Baby Hammers”, delivered the same aggressive styling and performance-focused character in a slightly more attainable package.

In this video, I take a rather tired Matchbox MB181 Mercedes-Benz 300E and give it the AMG-inspired treatment. My model had certainly seen better days, with a bent A-pillar, a yellowed windscreen and plenty of paint damage, particularly to the base. After repairing the damage, I transform the humble diecast into a period-correct AMG-inspired restomod.

I repair the model’s damaged bodywork, straightening the bent A-pillar and restoring the yellowed glazing. I then transform the Matchbox Mercedes with a series of period-inspired AMG modifications, adding front and rear lip spoilers along with a ducktail rear spoiler to capture the aggressive styling of AMG’s famous 1980s creations. The finishing touch comes in the form of classic AMG Aero 3 wheels before the entire model is refinished to complete the transformation into a miniature tribute to one of the most iconic eras in AMG’s history.

MATCHBOX 70e MB70 Ferrari 308 GTB custom

While best known as a road-going sports car, the Ferrari 308 GTB also forged an impressive competition career in rallying. Initially homologated into FIA Group 4, the lightweight fibreglass-bodied cars proved surprisingly competitive on tarmac events. As rally regulations evolved, the 308 continued into the Group B era before later being morphed into the GT/M for the canned ‘Evolution’ category of Group B. The Group 4 308 achieved Ferrari’s greatest World Rally Championship result when Jean-Claude Andruet and co-driver Michèle “Biche” Petit drove their number 12 Ferrari 308 GTB to second place overall on the 1982 Tour de Corse, finishing behind only the factory Renault 5 Turbo.

This Matchbox 308 GTB was introduced in 1981 during Lesney’s ownership prior to their bankruptcy. It was retained following the Universal Toys takeover and later repainted in a livery reflective of that of the Group 4 Charles Pozzi GTBs. There were a couple of other colour variations but it was deleted from the mainline by 1988.

At some point in its life, nearly every visible surface had been covered with black marker pen. The body, windows and details were heavily affected, leaving the model looking far removed from its original appearance. In this restoration and customisation project, I remove the marker damage, restore the previously blacked-out windows, completely repaint the body and replace the wheels with a set appropriate for the casting. The finished model is transformed into a fairly accurate replica of Andruet’s number 12 308 from the 1982 Tour de Corse.

HOT WHEELS K6138 Shelby Cobra Daytona custom

The Shelby Daytona Coupe is one of the most iconic American racing cars of the 1960s. Developed by Carroll Shelby and designed by Peter Brock, the Daytona was created to solve the aerodynamic shortcomings of the AC Cobra on high-speed circuits. Powered by Ford’s 289 cubic inch V8, the Daytona Coupe achieved international success against Ferrari, helping Shelby American secure the 1965 FIA World Sportscar Championship for GT manufacturers.

This Hot Wheels model was released as part of the mainline range in the 2007. This particular model was kindly sent to me by Michael. Like many childhood toys, it had seen better days after being painted during his younger years. An attempt had also been made to remove the old paint before it arrived, leaving behind a number of issues including paint residue on the windows and a generally rough finish.

In this custom project, I set out to bring the little Daytona back to life. The overpainted windows are cleaned up, the body is completely refinished, and the original tacky-looking wheels are replaced with a much more authentic set that better suit the car. I recreate the famous number 5 Shelby Daytona Coupe that won the GT class at the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans, complete with an accurate replica livery and decals inspired by the historic race-winning machine.

M.C. Toy Lancia Rally 037 custom

The Lancia 037 is one of the most iconic rally cars ever built, and in this video I take a lesser spotted diecast example and transform it into a more accurate representation of the road-going 037 Stradale.

The model featured here was produced by MC Toy and information is scarce, but the casting was also released under the Edocar brand and appears with only a couple of colour variations.

Developed to compete in the fearsome Group B era of rallying, the 037 was based on the road-going Stradale version produced for homologation purposes. The story of Lancia reportedly moving unfinished cars around during FIA inspections to help demonstrate the required production numbers has become one of rallying’s most enduring legends. On the stages, the 037 achieved something even more remarkable, securing the 1983 World Rally Championship Manufacturers’ title and becoming the last rear-wheel-drive car ever to win the championship, defeating the four-wheel-drive Audi Quattro in the process.

Looking at the casting, I believe it more closely resembles the 037 Stradale than the competition rally car. The rear end is the biggest clue, with its rectangular tail lights rather than the round units seen on the rally version. With that in mind, I decided to steer the project in a road car direction, fitting more appropriate wheels, refinishing the body in a Stradale-inspired red, and adding interior detailing to bring the little model closer to the real thing.

HTI Ferrari Enzo custom

This week I’m asking myself a question: can I improve on this awkward and misshapen looking generic to make it look more like a Ferrari Enzo? The casting is an obvious loose replica but has had areas cast where they needn’t be. Or if it were a cost saving exercise, they then haven’t been trimmed appropriately, namely the black surrounds to the windows but the solid red A-pillar, or the red painted rear diffuser. I believed that there was lots that could be done to make this look better without needing to chop and cut this diecast.

The Ferrari it (sort of) replicates was named after the founder himself. The Enzo came at a time when things were good for Ferrari. They were in the midst of several extremely successful Formula 1 campaigns, while their road cars were reaching a peak, offering raw power without electronic aids, hybrid or turbocharging. Built between 2002 and 2004, the Enzo was the beacon, the pinnacle, the Ferrari halo car of the era before all of these driving assists came into play.

MATCHBOX Vauxhall Cavalier BTCC custom

This isn’t my first time working on one of Matchbox’s short-lived MB201 Vectra / Cavalier GSi 2000 MB201 castings. Before, I customised one to replicate John Cleland’s 1992 British Touring Car Championship entry. Some time has passed since then and I wanted to revisit it by recreating the last Vauxhall Cavalier to grace the BTCC from 1996.

The Fujifilm and Danepak liveried car belonged to Mint Motorsport and was driven by Richard Kaye in 1996 and then Jamie Wall in 1997 (albeit in a different livery that year). The car was the last Cavalier built by Vauxhall Sport. After it’s retirement from top level motorsport in 1997 it would eventually be restored and now competes in historic touring car racing, driven by Tony Absolom whose number 67 appears on the side of this recreation today.

Vauxhall used their legacy name for the Opel Vectra A when it was launched in 1988. The Cavalier name stretched back to 1975 when the name was used on the UK equivalent to the Opel Ascona B. The GSi 2000 model was the highest performance offering on the car until 1992 when it received a facelift and an upgraded engine with a turbocharger. The casting had been introduced in 1990 and would last only two years, disappearing after 1991, possibly due to this facelift.
