I want to share a special memory I will hold deeply in my existence, celebrating this beautiful & amazing soul Sophia! @silliesofie Thank you Lina for the invite & delicious food catered by @creativeideascatering . Many thanks to our hermano Tito @titosmundo for connecting us como familia. 🫶🏽🇳🇮🇨🇴

Below is a snippet of my speech I presented when I was invited to be a guest speaker at her graduation.

“As a scholar & educator, I’ve had the pleasure to speak at many graduations across college campuses but this one was special because this one is rooted in community. I’m not just speaking to the people who love, support and helped Sophia. I get to speak directly TO Sophia!

As a Latina who sometimes has been the only Latina in the room, the only Latina in my Masters program, I know what it is to feel invisible. I’ve sat at conferences hoping someone, anyone who looks like me was talking to me. That day has come for Sophia.

Although this is the first time we ever met, we have more in common than you think.

We are both first-gen Latinas & NICAdemics. We both graduated from City College of San Francisco & have a common friend, Alonso. We both fell in love with our Latino culture so much that we majored in Raza & Chicano/a/x Studies. And sadly, we both know what it feels like not being full seen as Nicaraguan women in academic spaces.

…here’s my gift to you, Sophia.

You can tap into me anytime! Anytime you feel alone, anytime you need a friend, anytime academia tries to label you an impostor as you navigate higher education, whenever you decide to go back to graduate school. Whatever it is you desire, just know I’m here. Someone who has navigated this space, who is not afraid to stand up to anyone or anything.

Because after all, we come from the land of lakes and volcanoes. It’s in our flag. It’s in our blood. It’s in our spirit. 🇳🇮🌋

When you do decide to embark on your graduate school journey, know that you don’t just have a Nica hermana. You have a Latinas with Masters community!”

Congratulations Sophia! Bachelor’s in Psychology with a Minor in Chicano Studies ~ UC Davis ~ Go Aggies! 🐎
