Summer Series Part 1: Medicine in the wild 🌿✨ Nature has been speaking loudly this season—and I’ve been listening. Here are six beautiful plant allies I met on my recent adventures. Each one reminded me how much medicine and meaning lives right beneath our feet. From soft, silvery leaves to sun-soaked blossoms, they each have a story to tell—and I’m so excited to share them with you 🐝🌼 Slide through to meet them 🍃 🌼 Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) • Stops bleeding and reduces inflammation • Supports fevers, cramps, and digestion • Great in teas, salves, or poultices ⸻ 🌵 Yucca • Detoxifying—used for joint pain and any skin issues • Rich in saponins, which helps cleanse the system • Root used in decoctions or as natural soap •In Native cultures, it’s a purifier that washes away illness, negativity, and fatigue. •Only blooms once every few years—a rare and powerful moment 🌸 ⸻ 🍍 Pineapple Weed • Calming wild chamomile • Soothes anxiety, tummy aches, and restlessness • Use fresh or dried in tea ⸻ ☀️ 🧈🍳 Tall Butter-and-Eggs • Bitter herb for liver and skin support • Helps with sluggish digestion • Used in tea or salves ⸻ 🤍 Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) • Supports lungs—great for coughs and asthma • Calms the chest and opens breathing • Used in tea, tincture, or smoke blends •Its tall stalks were once dipped in wax to create torches, giving it the nickname candlewick plant. ⸻ 🌊 White Marsh Marigold • Not edible—can be toxic not be harvested • A native wetland plant to observe and protect • Beauty and balance in wild spaces •A reminder that some medicine is not to take but to enjoy in the moment and witness 🌾 Some of these are native to this land, and others were brought here and naturalized over time. I encourage learning from both traditional and modern uses—with gratitude for the cultures that first knew these plants. 🌿 There is medicine all around you. BOTANICAL FACIAL CARE 🌿✨ Spent the other night learning about natural facial care + botanical formulation. We talked about creating a healthy facial-care routine and how different botanicals can support different skin types. Learned about cleansing, steaming, exfoliating, masks, toners + facial serums. Swipe through to learn more step by step! FIRST: BOTANICAL FACIAL SCRUB 🌸 •We made an Exfoliating Face Scrub with Rose + Geranium. •Apricot kernel meal → provides gentle physical exfoliation. •Kaolin clay → a softer, less absorbent clay. •Rose petal powder → adds a beautiful botanical element. •Finished with geranium essential oil. •Learned that exfoliation is all about balance — too much can irritate the skin and disrupt its natural barrier. NEXT: OIL CLEANSING ✨ •Learned how oil-based cleansers can gently remove makeup, dirt + impurities. •Made a simple blend of jojoba oil + castor oil + squalane oil. •The workshop explained that oil cleansing can help cleanse while maintaining the skin’s natural moisture barrier. • We even learned how to incorporate warm steam while cleansing. HERBAL FACIAL STEAMS 🌸 •We learned how to combine dried herbs into facial steam blends. •Balancing: rose petals + lavender + clary sage 🌹 •Soothing: chamomile + rosemary + lavender 🌼 •Clarifying: clary sage + lavender + rosemary + thyme 🌿 •The steam is used as part of the facial routine to promote circulation + help soften the skin. CLAY MASKS ✨ •Learned about 4 different clays and how they differ: • Kaolin → gentler + less absorbent • French Green → stronger drawing/absorbing properties •Rose Clay → gentle + suited to dry/sensitive skin • Rhassoul → mineral-rich + absorbs oil while remaining relatively gentle • We also learned how to customize clay masks with powdered herbs, hydrosols, honey + essential oils. 🌿 THEN WE GOT INTO TONERS 🌸 • Learned that toners can be used after cleansing as part of a facial routine. • Brightening: rose hydrosol + neroli hydrosol • Balancing: lavender hydrosol + witch hazel • Soothing: aloe + rose hydrosol • I loved seeing how simple botanical ingredients can be combined depending on what you’re trying to formulate for. Summer Series Part 3: Come see what I found. 🌿 👑 Queen’s Crown (Rhodiola rhodantha) • Delicate Colorado native found in alpine & subalpine habitats • Recognized by its succulent leaves and rosy-pink flowers • A beautiful reminder that sometimes the best medicine is simply slowing down ⸻ 🎨 Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja spp.) • Iconic wildflower of the Western landscape • A fascinating hemiparasite that grows in relationship with neighboring plants • Is a hemiparasite—it taps into the roots of nearby plants for water and nutrients. • A beautiful reminder of the interconnectedness of the plant world ⸻ 🌸 Pink Pussytoes (Antennaria rosea) • Tiny pink blooms that resemble little tufts of fur • Native to Colorado’s mountain landscapes • A sweet little pollinator plant that’s easy to overlook ⸻ 🌿 Lupine (Lupinus spp.) • Iconic Colorado mountain wildflower • Provides important resources for pollinators • Some species contain toxic alkaloids, particularly in their seeds—one beautiful reason to admire rather than casually forage. 🍇 Oregon Grape (Mahonia repens) • Native to Colorado & the Rocky Mountains • Tart, blue-purple berries that ripen in late summer • Traditionally valued for its roots, bark, and berries ⸻ ☠️ Poison Ivy (Toxicodendron rydbergii) • Native plant with the classic “leaves of three” • Contains urushiol, the oil that causes its infamous rash • Learning plants isn’t just about finding medicine; it’s about knowing what to recognize, respect, and leave alone.
