Creative Lancashire in association with the BFI National Archive and British Textile Biennial presents a special Conversations in Creativity screening of Threads of Memory by Juliana Kasumu, followed by panel discussion and Q&A.

📍 6-8pm Thursday 22 October 2026 Harris Museum & Art Gallery, Preston PR1 2PP

with
Harris Elliott OBE @harriselliottstudio – Cultural Curator
Jemma Buckley @bfinetwork – BFI National Archive
Juliana Kasumu @julianakasumu – Filmmaker
Hosted by Tosin Adeosun @motown_gal – Curator & Fashion Historian

The event is free to attend but places are limited, places must be booked through eventbrite (link in bio 🔗)

Using historical footage from the BFI National Archive, as well as more recent online video works, this exploration of the influences of West African and Caribbean migration on Black British fashion highlights how migration, identity and resilience alongside the ever-expanding style and social exchange via moving image have shaped (and continues to shape) this fashion movement.

This fascinating compilation of archive material will be followed by an expert panel to discuss the themes and ideas explored by Kasumu, and the importance of archival footage in telling and preserving stories for future generations. Alongside Kasumu, contributors include Harris Elliott (Le Tings), Tosin Adeosun (African Style Archive) and Jemma Buckley (BFI National Archive).

The event will take place on Thursday 22 October (6-8pm – Doors 5.30pm) at the recently reimagined Harris Museum & Art Gallery in Preston and coincides with our Black History Month UK programme.

The Threads of Memory screening and panel discussion forms part of the wider Inside the Archive exhibition that will be on display at the Harris Museum & Art Gallery from 23 October – 5 November 2026. However, attendees of the screening and panel will have an opportunity to preview the exhibit during the event on 22 October.

The Inside the Archive Exhibition is supported by the BFI Screen Heritage Fund, awarding National Lottery Good Cause Funding.

Scenes from our recent Conversations in Creativity discussion with artist Penelope Payne, Elena Jackson and Gillian Berry, which took place at the Haworth Art Gallery on 7th August 2026.

Creative Lancashire in collaboration with National Festival of Making, Hyndburn Council and the Haworth Art Gallery hosted a Conversations in Creativity exploring the role of contemporary art in heritage settings.

This Conversations in Creativity featured artist Penelope Payne and Elena Jackson (Co-Founder and Director of the National Festival of Making) and was moderated by Gillian Berry (Arts & Heritage Manager at Haworth Art Gallery).

The conversation coincided with Penelope Payne’s installation ‘Canon’ which was exhibited at the Haworth Art Gallery in Accrington, Lancashire in early August 2026.

Drawing on Penelope’s recent co-commission for Haworth Art Gallery and the National Festival of Making, the discussion explored how Penelope’s practice uses archives, sound and storytelling to uncover overlooked histories, giving voice to the lives, labour and experiences that have often remained unseen. The participants also considered how contemporary artists can create new ways of understanding historic places through researched and place-responsive work.

The recording of the full session can be viewed on the Creative Lancashire website (on our media page) or on our YouTube channel.

From 5th - 9th August, Canon by Penelope Payne was exhibited at Haworth Art Gallery, the very place that inspired the work.

Through sculpture and sound, Canon invited audiences to move through a layered environment where historical narratives and contemporary experience overlap. Reflective materials, architectural references and an immersive soundscape encouraged visitors to consider not only what is remembered, but whose stories endure, and how the spaces we inherit continue to shape our understanding of community, belonging and social change.

As part of this exhibition and in partnership with Creative Lancashire, Elena Jackson, Festival of Making Co-Director and Curator of Art in Manufacturing, chaired a 'Conversations in Creativity' panel discussion exploring the role of contemporary art in heritage settings. In Conversation with Penelope Payne and Gillian Berry, Arts and Heritage Manager of The Haworth Art Gallery, the talk explored the role of contemporary art in heritage settings.

Elena said: “Our conversation reflected on the way contemporary art can bring the less visible histories of a place into view. Penny’s work invites us to think about who has traditionally been seen and heard within spaces like Haworth Art Gallery, and how artists can help us encounter inherited stories from new perspectives.”

We’re excited to be able to announce the shortlist for the new round of the Northern Doc Fund, the only UK scheme to focus specifically on supporting working-class documentary filmmakers in the North of England. The Northern Doc Fund is now in its fourth year and the theme for 2026/27 is ‘recovery’.

The five shortlisted film makers will pitch their documentary idea at @bifa_film and @bafta qualifying @boltonfilmfest in front of a live audience and industry judges, on Thursday 1 October. The two successful filmmakers will make it onto the Northern Doc Fund cohort and receive a ÂŁ3,000 bursary and 6 months mentorship.

The five shortlisted filmmakers are @thecharfenton, @darshangajjar, @mrjon1986, @meabhmcgvn and @naeuk.

Charlotte is an emerging northern filmmaker with a passion for telling honest, human-led stories. Based in Cumbria, Charlotte is particularly interested in bringing underrepresented experiences and compelling real-life stories to the screen.

Darshan is a Sheffield-based documentary filmmaker exploring stories around identity, migration and racism.

Jon is based in Oldham and loves finding stories about inspiring people, and sharing them with the world. He has spent the last few years making observational documentaries about people overcoming life's challenges in unusual ways.

Méabh is a Manchester born and based filmmaker, whose creative passion is in appreciating the stories found in the seemingly ordinary and unassuming pockets of the world around her.

Nathaniel is a poet, archival researcher, and documentary filmmaker based in Manchester. Nathaniel’s heartfelt work preserves lived experiences, centring global majority, migration, and mental wellness stories that explore identity, community, and survival.

Alongside the cash bursary and mentorship, the two winners will receive post production support from @sticksandglass, a 2027 @sheffdocfest delegate pass, therapeutic advice from @film.in.mind, and a premiere cinema screening of their finished film at the @leighfilmfactory
