The Institute, in brief: April 19 to June 23, 2027. Twelve women, at most. Ten weeks of serious work on how you lead, including a week in New York and a week on a ranch in Wyoming, followed by membership in the Creative Leaders Guild.

You’ll leave with a clearer sense of how you lead, practical tools you can put to work right away, a concrete plan for the challenge that matters most to you, and peers who understand your work.

🤔 Arts and culture leaders constantly confront either/or problems that resist clean answers. Mission vs. Money. Preservation vs. Innovation. Audience v. Authority. The leaders who do this work well learn to think beyond this framings toward a third way that honors more than one priority at once.

🎨 Day 4 of CLGI26 in NYC took us to the Brooklyn Museum. 🎨

Thank you, Laval Bryant-Quigley and Chelsea Ettlinger, for leading a fantastic conversation on corporate and community partnerships that was so good that several Guild members told me, more than once, that it was the most useful hour of the trip.

Then we walked to lunch @chavelasnyc and didn't stop the conversation. Around the table, women running cultural institutions across the country, in absolutely no hurry to be anywhere else, swapped questions, contacts, and ideas you only get from peers you trust who know what other female leaders need to do their best work.

This is what the Guild is for. 🏆

Thank you @lavalshante and @goodcheese_bigcheese ! Guild members are still texting each other about. And thank you to everyone who came for the day and stayed for the long lunch!

Day 3 in New York ended at #CitiField for a #Mets game with the 2026 cohort and members of the Creative Leaders Guild. ⚾

The Mets lost. (#LGM anyway!) The only Home Run Apple that rose up was the one we posed in front outside the ballpark.

Mrs. Met (@mrsmet), of course, was the highlight. Mr. Met (@mrmet), you were lovely, too.

🎉 Day 3 in New York: the day our 2026 cohort met the Guild Members for the first time. 🎉

All but one of the #CLGI25 cohort returned (@sneltrein_ @lavalshante @concettacreative @fanna__g @jennygerow @aandreastang @rku_views We missed you @boatside!) and two of the #CLGI23 cohort (@mimityun @mariagoyanes) were there, too! Watching cohort and Guild members connect, work together on new ideas, swap contacts, and laugh over meals was inspiring and affirming!

👏 What an amazing four days in New York with the 2026 cohort of the Creative Leaders Guild Institute. 👏

The seven women began shaping their signature projects, #CreativeConundrum and #LeadershipLab, and started learning more about themselves, each other, and the issues they want to focus on.

Some of that work happened in formal sessions. Just as much happened over the dinners, the cab rides, and the walks in between.

I was impressed and inspired at every turn: by their #expertise, #candor, #creativity, #rigor, and #laughter, which was constant. Intelligence and delight belong together, and this cohort made the case! 🤭 😂

This year’s group includes leaders working in museums, libraries, film, and theater from major institutions and independent organizations across the country.

The Creative Leaders Guild Institute is a leadership program for women leading arts and culture organizations. Through a structured, multi-week experience, participants engage in self-assessment, peer exchange, and project development to strengthen their leadership and respond to complex institutional and sector-wide challenges.

The Institute is part of the Creative Leaders Guild, a national community of leaders working across disciplines, organization types, and geographies. Guild members contribute to an ongoing exchange of ideas and approaches shaping the future of leadership in the cultural sector.

For years, the cultural sector has invested heavily in training leaders. Programs like National Arts Strategies and the Getty Leadership Institute helped prepare many of us to run complex institutions.

But as NAS announced last week that 2026 will be its final year operating in its current form, I’ve been thinking about a different question:

⁉️ Where should cultural leaders go now to think together about the future of the field? ⁉️

We need spaces where directors, curators, operators, and strategists can step outside their institutions and wrestle honestly with the structural questions facing the sector.

✍ Creative Leaders Guild founder @_heathernolin_ wrote a short commentary reflecting on this moment and what it might signal for the next chapter of leadership in the arts.
