I saved over $300 on this wall!

It might look like real shiplap…
but it’s actually made with thin plywood strips!

These underlayment plywood sheets cost me less than $15 each. I got 8 boards out of 1 full sheet, bringing the 24 boards I needed to under $50!!

Compare that to regular shiplap at $14.98 a board, that would’ve cost me $360
Talk about a budget-friendly win!

I’ll forever love this wall hack. The size and layout of the strips are totally customizable too, which makes it even better!

You won't believe that these started out as inexpensive pine! Add in the wire brush detail, a fail proof paint and stain combo, and the product is beams that look like they're straight out of a high-end home!

DIY doesn't have to be complicated or expensive!

Another section done!

This was the last section of the lower siding on the west side of our income suite build, which means we now have the front and this side finished.

Now it's just the east side left and the lower portion will be done.

Section by section we're getting this addition sided!!

Part two of cleaning up the pathway around the income suite build.

In the first part, we removed the old rotting boards, laid down some landscape ties and filled the area in with gravel.

Now, we've continued the pathway down the slope by using the landscape ties to create some simple U shaped steps, then filled in each one with gravel.

Because this part of our property slopes down, the steps seemed like the easiest way to continue the path without fighting the grade.

We still need to bring in some fill to level out the grassy area but even just cleaning up the landscaping here has made a huge difference and it's no longer distracting from the new siding. 🙌🏻

I almost spent $75 to replace this piece!

This corner took a pretty serious hit when the excavator bucket hit it digging for our income suite addition.

A huge chunk snapped off, leaving a pretty big, ugly void on the exterior corner of our home.

I figured there wasn't any point in dealing with it, until we were ready to attach the siding, where the new addition meets our existing home.

So now that we're at that point I decided I would try a quick fix before dropping $75 on a new one!

I glued and nailed the broken piece back in place, used epoxy putty to fill the larger voids, then sanded it smooth. For the final finish, I used some exterior spackle and a clay modeling tool to match the combfaced texture of our trim.

A little paint and you would never know there had been damaged. $75 saved!!! 🙌🏻

It was time! 😅

We orginally put down some boards in front of our income suite build (off cuts from the framing actually) as a temporary pathway to prevent us walking through the dirt but they were starting to rot!

So we cleaned it up, cut a straight edge, laid down some landscaping fabric, added some heavy landscape ties and filled it with gravel.

It's not completely finished yet.
We still need to build steps on either side and the area needs some landscaping but since the rainy season is approaching, it's going to prevent the dirt from splashing up on our newly added siding and trimmed out windows. 🙌🏻

More to come on this little area.

Since this is the most visible corner of our home (and specifically the income suite, where we will be hosting guests) I really wanted to make sure these cuts were precise.

So this was definitely a take my time and measure twice part of the project. I'm glad I slowed down for this part and I'm pretty pleased with how this section turned out.

We're slowly getting this addition sided, one section at a time.

I didn't love the way the siding was going to sit behind the lip of these outlet boxes, leaving those gaps just seemed like the perfect little collection area for bugs!! 🕷🕸🙅🏼‍♀️

So I miter cut a few pieces of combfaced trim to create a frame around the box, glued, nailed and then caulked to seal it all in place.

Then I cut the siding around the box so it could cleanly butt against the frame.

This side of the suite is definitely going a little slower because I'm taking my time with all these intricate cuts. We have 2 outlets, 2 light fixtures and a hose bib on this side, so there are a lot of little details to work around.

After a whole lot of prep, the boards are going on the income suite and all that hard work is so worth it!

The first 3 sections are up! We still have trim to install, some touch ups and a lot more siding to do but we are making progress!! 🙌🏻

Now onto the next side!

The truth is that I've built lots of this door style but this is the first time I drilled the hinges holes before assembling them.

I wasn't sure about the surrounding trim design on this particular part of the pantry build, so I wanted to visually test the width and reveal first.

That wouldn't have been possible with the beveled shaker trim applied.

I'll cover all of this in my full pantry build video once it's complete but since I'm getting lots of questions about these doors, I put together an in-depth tutorial showing the full build process.

It includes the materials I used, how to bevel the strips, an easy way to assemble them, how to finish the edges and my trick for getting those seams to disappear.

We had an unexpected visitor completing the vaulted area today! 🦝 When I was halfway up the ladder this morning, out of the corner of my eye I saw a raccoon climbing along the rafters! He disappeared into the insulation and now we can't finish the soffits until we know he has vacated!! 😬

We trimmed out this vaulted focal point with 16' - 2x8 combfaced trim boards that weren't light to say the least, used cement board as the backer and cut & applied trim pieces to create these shaker style boxes that add the perfect Craftsman charm.

We've been working on the exterior of the income suite build while the weather has been nice and it feels so good to finally have this boxed out window and vaulted area all trimmed out. 👏🏻👏🏻

What's next ...
Soffits and siding still need to be finished, and ... I'm getting really close to sharing what's been happening inside.

We're going to let the weather dictate the day to day work but there's definitely some big project reveals coming up soon.
