I’m excited and proud to present my capstone project “Permanence”. Being surrounded by tattoos my whole life, I really wanted to capture the art of tattooing in a fun and whimsical way by showcasing that within a garment. I decided the way I would highlight this would be through embroidering. Like a tattoo artist, the art of embroidering takes on similar skills of patience, practice, artistry, a steady hand, etc… For this project I decided to focus on the style of old school tattoos, something many are familiar with and love! I researched iconic flash artwork and settled on motifts like pinup girls, panthers, a kewpie, a message in the bottle, a mom heart, etc… I started off my process by hand drawing my “flash” and gave each piece a Ruby feel! I then took my stencil and used invisible marker ink and traced them on the panels of my pants and began hand embroidering. This took me exactly 1 week and I’d spend roughly 6-14 hours a day hand embroidering. If I was lucky I’d be able to complete three embroideries a day. This technique felt like it made the most sense for tattooing and translated well on the garment. I wanted to do this the proper way by paying my homage to the long hours and hard work tattoo artists do to create the perfect piece. Coming up with the artwork, placement of the tattoo, working on the piece, and the satisfaction of completing it. My goal for this project was to create something that would make people smile when viewing it. From drape, pattern, to final fabric! Using playful elements like the cone bra, my homemade sailor hat, arm band, and the large flare on my romper was all to add to the whimsical nature of it all!

My garment will be on display at the Fashion Institute of Technology’s museum located on West 27th Street on 7th ave from March 29-April 20! I hope you find joy within this piece as much as I do ⚓️ by @creativesbyru
