Ribbon Sweetlips, Plectorhinchus polytaenia.
Found singly or in small schools close to caves and ledges during the day dispersing at night to hunt for food over current prone coastal and seaward reefs. They feed on small invertebrates.
These very photogenic fish can be found on most dive sites in Raja Ampat but in a certain few "hotspots" they can be found schooling normally in deeper water. .

Nembrotha kubaryana nudibranch. These nudis feed on tunicates/ascidians. N. kubaryana uses the toxins in its prey ascidians to defend itself against predators. It stores the ascidian's toxins in its tissues and then releases them in a slimy defensive mucus when alarmed.

You know you're in Raja Ampat when.......Wobbegong or Carpet Sharks can be seen on almost every dive. These are ambush predators that prefer to sit and wait under corals and ledges and hunt at night.

The Clouded Moray - Echidna nebulosa.
Is a nocturnal predator, ambushing fish and crustaceans. Seen on most reefs around the world on night dives. Very fast and often difficult to get a good photo due it being quite timid.

Harlequin Shrimp - Hymenocera picta.
During our recent dives in Ambon on @mutiara_laut we found quite a few of these little guys. At only 5cm in size they are formidable predators of starfish.
They are often seen in pairs usually hiding under rocks or in crevices during the day. At night in some rubble areas it is fairly common to see them out hunting for starfish. They are able to pull starfish several times larger than themselves off the rocks. They then carry them back into their hiding spot and have a meal for the next few days.

Here's the answer to our previous photo puzzle ---- There were 4 Stonefish in total.
During a recent dive at Laha, Ambon I came across a group of Stonefish. Clearly the female is pregnant. Just like in many other marine creatures, fertilization takes place in the water. Female releases huge number of eggs that will be sprayed with male's sperm. These eggs are food for many sea creatures and only small number of fertilized eggs will survive and reach maturity. Venom produced by stonefish induces severe pain, paralysis and tissue necrosis. Since it may lead to heart failure, quick medical help is essential. Complete recovery requires adequate amount of anti-venom.

Stonefish, one of the masters of reef camouflage. During our recent trip to Ambon on @mutiara_laut we came across this scene, multiple stonefish. It's a very large female full of eggs being stalked by a number of amorous males waiting for her to eject the eggs so they can fertilize them.
