A great deal of thought went into designing this trophy for @nikerunning and @a.runners.mind. We set out to create something not just decorative but functional. Its flare, like a torch, carries the spirit of a runner—the flame embodying movement, passion, and a tribute to competition.

At Track & Feels, we come from design backgrounds, so being able to collaborate with SFMOMA is an absolute dream.

We were so excited to learn about their upcoming exhibition, “Get In The Game” which revolves around why we love sports through the lens of art and design. We wanted to use this opportunity to design and create a meaningful object around our favorite sport - running.

Athletic equipment has almost always been portrayed as tools or commodities built for performance and mass production.

On the other hand, trophies and ceremonial objects around sports events are seen as valuable and are designed with meaning.

The track relay baton is one of those mass produced commodities. And yet it is used to represent the most important attributes of running a relay: community, teamwork, and connection.

We were inspired by these attributes and used them as a guide to design a commemorative relay baton to celebrate our love of running and community.

In a track and field relay, there is a brief moment within each exchange zone where two runners must synchronize their speeds to pass the baton. We represented this moment by applying a helical texture onto the surface of the baton. Edges represent lanes on the track and converge from one end to the other, further visualizing the baton exchange and moment of connection.

Although we are not mass producing this baton, we made sure to make it with as little waste material as possible. To do so, each baton is machined from sourced stock tubing that matches closely to our design’s specifications.
