Lakan Sulo 10 x 10Recycled Fabrics, Linen, Cotton & Polyester.2026I’ve been studying how light meets the body—how shadows fall and shift with time. It has me in a chokehold, in the best way. At the same time, I’ve been returning to my mother’s native language, tracing its roots back to pre-colonial Philippines. This is the first work in an untitled four-part collection. It’s my favorite so far. It made its debut on Saturday at @virginiamoca Community Day as part of a collaborative U-Haul exhibition with the @contemporaryartsnetwork. by @creator_flower

We want to say thank you to everyone who has supported our activation, “The Gift of Time”, over the past few weeks. Over the past year this residency has felt like a home to us and our intention was to open the space and share that feeling with you all. As I’m looking back at the many moments we’ve shared, I see that we did just that. We shared stories, laughed, created, ate, and met many new people - many of which have never been to the CAN. A carousel post wasn’t enough for the many, many moments that we felt with you all. There’s a beauty in coming together and letting the spirit of collaboration lead the way and we’re honored to be able to do so.Therefore, @creator_flower and I would like to share one final moment with you all as First Patron Artists in Residence with “the Last Hour”, a final gathering to experience The Gift of Time. Additionally, we’ve made some changes to the monthly schedule, as we thought it would be best to not overload ourselves. This includes the rescheduling of the “Night Market” and “Kick Back, Give Back”. These two events will be now happening concurrently with the final gathering on August 8th, 6-10pm. In the mean time, if you’d like to schedule a visit just directly message or email. We hope to see you there! This artist residency with @ContemporaryArtsNetwork, in collaboration with @CityCenterAtOysterPoint, challenged my understanding of what I could create. I create stories through fabric. But could I create stories with people? With my community? My vision was simple: a storytelling experience. Not just my stories—our stories. But the real story is the experience itself.People listening.People laughing. Crying.People remembering.Together, we create something that didn’t exist before. The experience becomes a new story that belongs to everyone in the room.This is Sulo.Thank you to everyone who trusted us with a piece of their story, and to @360ArtsProduction for preserving these moments so beautifully.Tomorrow at 7 PM, we gather again in the studio gallery. A Month with the CAN at @citycenteratoysterpoint !With tomorrow marking the official opening of our activation, The Gift of Time, we’re excited to invite you to a full month of programming at our studio-gallery.Current First Patron Artist-in-Residence, MarieAnn “Flower” Fluker (@creator_flower), will kick things off tomorrow evening with SULO, a storytelling experience beginning at 7:00 PM ET at the studio-gallery.Throughout the month, we’ll also host a series of programs, conversations, and creative gatherings that explore the themes of the activation. Week one is in the books.I’ve learned that this educator role I’ve stepped into doesn’t mean that I teach people what to make.I’m teaching my students how to notice.How to trust their instincts.How to slow down.How to tell the truth through the work of their hands.Week one wasn’t about perfect stitches. Y’all heard of an ugly cry, right?Ever heard of an ugly joy?Because apparently this is what mine looks like. 😂I saw these photos from my demo at @virginiamoca and my first thought was, “Lawd, what is my face doing?” Joy is not photographing the way I think it should. 😂 But I love these photos still!! I realized my face is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do when you’re living a life you imagined years ago.For years I’ve been collecting cloth, studying textiles, making art, asking questions, and following my curiosity. To now be teaching others and watching them discover the power of fabric, memory, and storytelling… it does something to me.Maybe this is what joy looks like when it catches you off guard.And if that’s the case, I’ll happily be an ugly joyer.See y’all Saturday!!✨Registration is still open.
