This stunning tie-dye attire worn by author and poet @lanresonde caught my attention among a sea of vibrant colours and beautiful outfits @afriballofficial

This was one of the looks that stood out to me. As an artist myself, I think it was the artistry of the tie-dye pattern that drew me in. What makes tie-dye even more fascinating is the rich history behind it. This ancient resist-dyeing technique has been practised around the world for thousands of years, with cultures across Africa, Asia, and the Americas developing their own unique methods. Using thread, raffia, stones, seeds, and other materials, artisans created intricate patterns that carried both cultural and artistic significance.

In West Africa, particularly among the Yoruba people of Nigeria, women artisans developed striking indigo textiles through a traditional technique known as Adire.

The Adire Oniko method creates bold, eye-catching patterns by tying cloth with raffia, seeds, or stones before dyeing, resulting in distinctive rings, circles, and spirals. This attire is a beautiful example of how fashion can carry history, culture, and artistry within every pattern.

So many stunning outfits at @afriballofficial 😍 This was one of my favourites ✨ @jossie_anne hairstyle was incredible and instantly caught my attention on the night.

After Afriball, I came across the work of artist @laetitiaky, who recreates traditional African hairstyles from before colonization. I was surprised to see one that looked just like the hairstyle Josy wore at Afriball, so I did a little more research.

I discovered that African hairstyles (before colonization) were much more than fashion. They communicated age, marital status, spiritual beliefs, social rank, and identity.

The hairstyle Josy Anne wore is one of the traditional styles seen before colonization, often described as side buns or horn-shaped puff arrangements. It was beautiful to see people embracing their culture and celebrating its rich history at this special event dedicated to the creativity, beauty, and love of the African diaspora. ❤️✨

Also massive congratulations Josy on being awarded podcaster of the year 👏👏👏

Congratulations to everyone recognised at @afriballofficial ✨️👏👏👏

I feel incredibly grateful to have witnessed the first Afriball in the North East, a landmark moment celebrating the achievements, creativity, and impact of the African diaspora. It was inspiring to see so many deserving individuals honoured and uplifted in a space rooted in culture, excellence, and community.

A beautiful reminder that when we gather, celebrate, and uplift one another, we create spaces where our stories, talents, and legacies can shine. So proud of this beautiful community and excited for what the future holds for the African diaspora.

This is only just the beginning 🙌
