Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein ! Had the absolute pleasure of sculpting this frozen horse for the film. The team at @thingergy_inc absolutely knocked it out of the park building this piece , turned out beautifully and looked fantastic in the eerie scene . @frankippolito and team featured in a few of these slides , printed the horse out life size and dressed it up to finish . So cool to see the scale of it and execution ! Last couple of slides are the initial assembly and then after GDTs note to make the horse more malnourished. I sculpted it based directly off the excellent concept work by @guydavis.art . Thanks to Frank for having me on the project , @jaredkrichevsky for the opening and special thanks to @andrea.lesley.adams for the guidance ! by @creature_preacher_

The DeathClaw! Right before we started up on resurfacing the Rad Roach for Season 2 of Fallout here at @refuge_studio we had a little down time. We wanted to reach out to the show runners and open up a door to consider us as a vendor for concept art on any future projects they might have coming around . As we’re mainly a production house we’re also pushing to get more creature concept work early on in projects , as we strive to build character in every job we work. We knew from season one that this big bad would be in the show , and wanted to take a stab at it for them unprompted as a proof of concept…so I started immediately! . But by that time the deathclaw design was already in production and had already been nailed by the legendary @jsmarantz , and he killed it ! They turned out fantastic in the show - absolutely brilliant work.
So we were late to the draw on that one but it served our purpose to get a little glimpse of some concept art from us in front of the showrunners . All in all it was a really fun little joint to take a stab at albeit not “officially” for the show , and was a good jumping off point for us right before we kicked into production on all our vfx sequences of exploding heads and roaches for season 2 .
For the design it self I just did a little bit of research on the character and all its iterations over the years , and decided to riff off the killer design by @iamjonahlobe from the game , aiming for my personal scarier take on it while staying in the vein of that framework -
I even ended up printing this guy 2 feet tall and painting him! I’ll be posting those photos soon! #conceptart #fallout #deathclaw

Creature Corner is back!
We made a weird little monster show for a few years. Got to hang out with some incredible artists, and somehow ended up with 125 episodes. I’ve been wanting to bring it back for a long time, so Creature Corner has its new home. Retro episodes start Sunday. Clips throughout the week. New stuff as we get rolling. If you make monsters, want to make monsters, or you just love ‘em like we do.

The Butcher of Innsmouth! A labor of love on one of my favorite designs . He’s just chopping up the questionable meat that goes into the stew at Gillmans Bar . This design was originally a Creature Corner project from a couple years back that I wanted to bring into the physical realm . Around 2 feet tall / 25” I think - printed FDM on my Bambu x1 Carbon over about 2.5 weeks - around 15ish or so pieces . Studio photos by my man @stephenseriously doing the lords work . I painted him over 6 or so weekends , in 8ish hour sessions . Glued and welded together with a soldering iron and hit it with every trick in the book I know - airbrushing , oil washes , dry brushing , line pulling , detailing with brushes and accenting the same way . And big shout out to the MonsterMaker blood that is all over this guy, it finishes and dries looking wet and really pops the material separation. He’s currently hanging out in the main room at Refuge VFX to greet every soul that walks in . He also doesn’t wash his hands . So it’s a gamble when eating the food he prepares because of what and ….who….is in it . 🤪. Deathclaw photoshoot! These are photos, yes real photos ! Taken by the highly talented @stephenseriously ! I brought the big guy into the studio last week and Stephen took some time out his busy day to get some seriously amazing photos of this big bad. I was blown away seeing them , he captured the creature amazingly . Now I gotta convince him to take photos of all my statues 😂. This guy was printed in about 15 different pieces all on my @bambulab_official carbon x1. He’s right at 24” tall, 2 feet! Unfortunately after printing and painting this guy I decided that I have to print everything else this big , it’s too fun. Has about 5 days of paint on him, will probably get another day or two outta me yet to call it done . Who cares? We’re Painting a Monster! Day One of blocking in paint on my Creature Print! - this last video, part 3 ! Of Day One blocking on this guy - we do some overtones with dry brushing , and hit that nasty dude with a third wash pass, a deeper sepia / sienna to get them crevices popping. A successful first day! This is the usual from the hip type of workflow I do when laying the foundation for my sculptures . by @creature_preacher_

Final art post of 2025 ! Instead of doing a recap - I present to you my New Year’s resolution ! I’ve been drawing on this Cthulu piece for 130+ hours . Just nearly done with the line work and values . My resolution is to commit another 100 to painting it ! I do one Cthulu a year as a baseline and wanted to get back to my roots with drawing and painting after sculpting for the last ten years . This is the first illustration I’ll see to completion in over a decade since I was initially building my portfolio for @gnomon_school . Been having a blast working on this , it’s meditative and therapeutic . Thank you to all my friends and colleagues that keep me going and keep me inspired . The latest in the “Shifters” concept art on my IP I’m a decade into . The Lovecraftian madness has made its way into our living realm (through our brains ?!!!!) and is controlling corpses to further breed their kind into our world. Ive been going in and out on this design for several years , and finally finding a direction and reveal I’m liking for this character / story point . These are the “zombies” of my story . The walkers , if you will, of the madness spreading through our society in physical form . Next time you see this guy he’ll be rigged and simmed, gnarly as ever . Skull floating open from a closed position to reveal the Alien Brain like parasite puppeteering the human corpse . Swipe for the early sketch and a few other tidbits , a little video of the state of the creature being closed and open. Sketched on iPad I procreate , blocked in on Zbrush for IPad , rendered a pass in Nomad sculpt , and finally for these hi color images taken into zbrush on PC and keyshot . A few early explorations in 3D of the dragon redesigns for the latest Dungeons and Dragons edition based off of the character sheets at the time . I did many many passes on all 10 dragons early on while design language was being established. So many awesome artists worked on this project and I’m proud to be a small part of it in its production stage. Was a good excersize in workflow for scales for sure ! Eldritch Spawn . While work is slow myself and a few of the vfx monsters at Refuge @graphicalninja @vfxtfx are noodling away on a personal project . The goal being a single hero shot of this giant creature breaching some water and eating a human sacrifice. With intent to develop a wider birth of shots and story as a possible pitch / look book. The project is ever evolving and constantly looking sicker and sicker . Main story points- an innsmouth type of setting with a human sacrifice to their deity . Fully animated / simulated water and eldritch sky effects . There is an elder storm that happens every x amount of years that illuminates the spawn points across the interdimensional world and its harboring wavelengths …awakening the young eldritch beings destined to be elder gods to get their feed .
We’re just a a couple of days into noodling and every element is looking so sick already . Here are some first refining phases of the creature along with some early environmental explorations on our guy hanging out in his underwater lair by @creature_preacher_
