Student Work Spotlight — Giulia Cempella

A fantastic T-Rex animation test by CAW student Giulia Cempella, created while exploring the rig for WS03 – Creature Interaction.

Giulia has done a wonderful job bringing weight, scale and character into the movement — and she also took the work further by creating the render herself. The final result looks fantastic.

This is still part of her exploration with the rig, and we’re looking forward to seeing where she takes the complete shot next.

Great work, Giulia!

Mentored by Danu at Creature Animation Workshop.

Real student work. Real progress.

A fantastic WS02 – Complex Body Mechanics shot from CAW student Shailesh Arote.

Through the workshop, Shailesh developed a deeper understanding of the small details that make creature animation believable — from micro-movements and weight to balance, behaviour and observation.

It’s especially rewarding to hear that what he learned at CAW is now helping him with his ongoing production shots.

A big thank you to Shailesh for sharing his experience, and to Mentor Danu for continuing to guide our students through their creature animation journey.

Next CAW Workshop: 8th September 2026
Only 6 students per intake

Most creature walk cycles don’t fail because of posing. They fail because the workflow breaks before the polish stage.

Across different creatures, the anatomy changes — but the fundamentals remain.

Weight. Balance. Timing. Contact. Body mechanics.
Getting these foundations working first is what allows the animation to feel believable before we start polishing the details.

These are some of the principles I focus on with students from WS00 – Creature Basics, building the foundation for the more advanced CAW workshops.

The goal isn’t simply to create a nice-looking walk cycle. It’s to understand why the creature moves the way it does.

🎓 Next CAW intake: 8th September 2026

Creature animation goes beyond locomotion — it becomes acting.

In WS04 – Creature Acting, students begin exploring performance, behaviour, intention and personality while still maintaining believable creature mechanics.

This is where everything learned through the earlier CAW workshops starts coming together — creating a creature that doesn't simply move, but performs.

- Next CAW intake starts 8th September 2026
- Only 6 students per intake
- Mentorship with Mentor Danu

Creature animation is not about making an animal simply move — it’s about understanding weight, balance, mechanics and behaviour.

Using our Savannah lioness, students progress step by step through the CAW workshops:

WS00 – Creature Basics
Building strong foundations in weight, balance and locomotion.

WS01 – Simple Body Mechanics
Developing stronger movement, transitions and body control.

WS02 – Complex Body Mechanics
Bringing mechanics, behaviour and performance together in more challenging shots.

As a mentor, my goal is to help students understand why a creature moves the way it does, so they can apply that knowledge to their own animation and continue developing beyond the workshop.

🎓 Next CAW Workshop starts 8th September 2026
Only 6 places per intake for personalised mentorship and feedback.

Another wonderful student journey from inside **Creature Animation Workshop**. 🐊

Shuko Kawaguchi joined **WS01 – Simple Body Mechanics**, developing her understanding of quadruped movement, reference observation, weight and believable creature mechanics.

Working closely with **Mentor Danu**, she continued pushing and refining the shot through feedback until the animation became stronger and more believable.

A huge **thank you to Shuko** for sharing this lovely testimonial and for trusting CAW and Mentor Danu as part of her animation journey. ❤️

🎓 Next CAW Workshop: 8th September 2026
Only 6 students per intake

From Reference to Final Animation

A little breakdown of Nayan Maity’s WS01 bear animation at Creature Animation Workshop.

We started by studying real bear movement — looking closely at weight, balance, body mechanics and behaviour.

From there, we worked through:

Reference → Blocking → Spline → Witness Cameras → Polish → Final Render.

One thing I always encourage my students to understand is that creature animation isn’t just about matching a reference. It’s about understanding why the animal moves the way it does and making that weight and behaviour feel believable.

Really nice work from Nayan taking this shot through the full process.

Our next CAW workshop intake starts 8th September 2026.

Every strong creature performance starts with strong fundamentals.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is animators jumping straight into complex shots before mastering the basics. That's why I designed the CAW workshops as a progression—not as separate courses.

WS00 – Creature Basics
Learn weight, balance, timing, and believable locomotion.

WS01 – Simple Body Mechanics
Build confidence with turns, transitions, and stronger body control.

WS02 – Complex Body Mechanics
Combine mechanics, performance, and natural movement into production-style animation.

Each workshop builds on the previous one, helping students develop the confidence and understanding needed for more advanced creature performances.

It's incredibly rewarding to watch students grow from their very first creature walk to creating animation they're proud to include in their showreels.

The next Creature Animation Workshop begins on 8th September 2026, with only 6 students per intake so every student receives personalised mentorship, live feedback, and continued offline reviews.

Great creature animation starts with the right tools and the right mentorship.

At Creature Animation Workshop, students learn using production-style creature rigs while receiving personalised guidance from Mentor Danu, helping them understand realistic movement, weight, balance, body mechanics, and performance.

The CAW Bull Rig gives students the opportunity to explore powerful quadruped locomotion and dynamic performance while following a real production workflow—building the skills needed for showreel-quality animation.

This production-ready rig is exclusively available to CAW workshop students as part of their learning journey.

🎓 Join Mentor Danu for the next Creature Animation Workshop, starting on 8th September 2026.

Only 6 students are accepted per intake, ensuring every student receives live mentorship, personalised feedback, and continued offline support throughout the workshop.

Every great creature animation is built through patience, practice, and perseverance.

Harsha's Creature Interaction sequence is a fantastic example of what can be achieved through dedication and the willingness to keep improving.

Working closely with Mentor Danu, Harsha embraced every round of feedback, refined his animation step by step, and never gave up. Through consistent practice and guidance, he transformed his ideas into a strong creature interaction performance that showcases believable weight, timing, mechanics, and storytelling.

We're incredibly proud of Harsha's journey and grateful to Mentor Danu for continuing to inspire and support our students every step of the way.

🎓 The next Creature Animation Workshop begins on 2nd August 2026.

Only 6 students are accepted per intake, ensuring every student receives personalised mentorship, detailed feedback, and continued support throughout their learning journey.

A great creature animation starts with a great rig.

At Creature Animation Workshop, our students learn using production-style creature rigs designed to help them understand real body mechanics, weight, balance, and believable performance.

The CAW Rhino Rig is one of the creatures students work with during their animation journey, giving them the opportunity to create strong showreel-quality shots while following a professional production workflow.

The next Creature Animation Workshop begins on 2nd August 2026 with Mentor Danu.

Only 6 students are accepted per intake, ensuring every student receives personalised mentorship, detailed feedback, and continued support throughout the workshop.

Every great creature animator starts somewhere.

When I designed the CAW workshops, my goal wasn't just to teach animation—it was to create a clear learning journey.

From Creature Basics (WS00) to Production-Level Performance (WS03), each workshop builds on the previous one, helping students develop a strong understanding of weight, balance, body mechanics, behaviour, interaction, and performance—step by step.

Watching students grow in confidence and create showreel-quality work through this journey is one of the most rewarding parts of being a mentor.

The next Creature Animation Workshop begins on 2nd August 2026.

Only 6 students are accepted per intake, ensuring every student receives personalised feedback, live mentorship, and continued guidance throughout their learning journey.
