Coming up next week: Train to Teach Early Years in Birmingham - Information Webinar

Our Early Years (3-7 yrs) Specialist Route into teaching is delivered locally in close collaboration with Titan Partnership. It offers a one year full-time school-based pathway to becoming a primary teacher with an early years or early primary specialism and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Our programme focuses on developing a deep understanding of the role of a professional teacher, preparing trainees for a career in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 (3-7 years).

This is a school-centred training that will immerse trainee teachers in the role, working with pupils and staff in a nursery or a primary school.

During this lunchtime webinar, we’ll cover:

🤔 Why choose a career in early years teaching?
🧑‍🎓 Why train with us?
✍️ Entry requirements
📖 Programme structure and content
👨‍🏫 What life is like as a trainee teacher
📚️ The application and interview process
💰️ Training fees and finance options
😁 Next steps and available support

If you are passionate about early childhood education and would like to make a difference in your local community, and/or would like to further develop your early years career, book a place via the link in our bio.

Research grant news:

TACTYC is committed to supporting early years teachers and practitioners as researchers and is delighted to launch its teacher/practitioner research project grant.

Five small grants of £1000 will be awarded for research conducted in early years settings, including pre-schools, nurseries, reception and Key Stage One classes. Teacher/practitioner researchers may apply independently or in collaboration with university researchers, provided that the leader of the school or setting, teacher or early years practitioner is leading the project.

The research projects may be an ongoing piece of research (within the last year) or a project that has not yet started. There is no set theme for this grant; each project will be judged on its own merit.

The deadline for submitting a proposal is 30 October 2026.

We were delighted to welcome our Year 2 and Year 3 Master's students back to CREC this week for the start of the new academic year.

The first taught day focused on building our learning community while exploring research paradigms, methodologies, and positionality. Through collaborative discussions, the cohort explored the key issues, questions and areas of policy and practice that inspire their interests, working together to refine emerging research.

It was a fantastic start to a year of enquiry, reflection and professional learning, and we are excited to see their ideas develop over the coming months.

Upcoming Event - our ever-popular Maths CPD day with Roy Broadfield is back!

This day will look at the Statutory Framework for the EYFS and the concepts covered in teaching Early Number.

We will identify the Early Learning Goals for number and counting and identify what the terms mean in practice.

For example - what does a 'deep understanding of numbers' mean?

What are the two types of subitising and why are they important?

How can we best teach subitising, number bonds and composition of number?

We will look at appropriate pedagogical strategies for teaching these.

A range of manipulatives and representations will be explored for teaching about subitising, the composition of number and number bonds.

Resources will be explored that will help you to teach the concepts more effectively through intentional learning and continuous provision.

This is going to be popular - book your place now!

A quick-start guide for new MA Ed (Early Years) students at CREC:🧑‍💻

🧠 Start thinking about your research now.
Begin exploring your professional inquiry focus early.
If you already have an idea, start reading online for relevant articles and chapters.
Tip: Early reading now = less stress later.

🤔 Make sure you have your needs met.
Ask yourself: Do I have the right conditions at home and at work?
Are the arrangements in place to help you focus on your studies?
Key question: Are you set up to succeed?

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Build your support network.
Support each other on face-to-face days and throughout the year.
When working remotely, ask a colleague or someone close to home to review your work and offer feedback.
Tip: A second pair of eyes helps.

🌐 Plan your ethical approach:
Consider the ethical aspects of your proposal from the start.
Read the EECERA ethical code to inform your planning - link on our website.

🧑‍💻 Read your course materials:
Understand what is required of you and when;
Write down your questions.
Bring them to your face-to-face day at CREC to discuss with your tutors.

📖 Browse CREC student papers:
See what's been researched before - and how.
Get inspired by previous MA projects - link on our website.

⭕️ Join the Learning Circle:
A community of practice where you can learn, ask questions, and network.

Last week, trainees have received their academic content for the PGCE component of their training via Sheffield Hallam University. We structured the day to include time for reflection, allowing them to engage with the theory, discuss the material as a community of practice, and support one another in planning their individual research projects. Find out more about our SCITT course - link in bio.

Our SCITT trainees are fully immersed in their Intensive Training and Practice (ITAP) weeks! They have been busy deepening their teaching knowledge through interactive seminars, observing expert colleagues in action across various school settings, and collaborating with their peers. This focused time allows them to bridge the gap between theory and classroom practice as they test new skills and reflect on their progress together. 👨‍🏫

Some news from CREC:

It is with a mixture of pride and sadness we announce that, after 20 years of service, our dear colleague, friend and Co-Director, Sean Delaney, is moving to a new, exciting and well-earned role working for the city of Birmingham.

During his time with us, Sean has significantly contributed to supporting CREC’s work through building, maintaining and improving many sector partnerships, through research and professional development programmes and he will be missed by us all. Change is, however, also an opportunity, and we have begun an exciting process of appointing someone with similar values and personal ethos to join our CREC team.

We are fast approaching our 30th year of supporting the Early Years Sector and CREC’s mission remains the same: to help create better opportunities for our youngest children and families to thrive. We look forward ambitious, highly motivated individuals joining the CREC team in our efforts.

Therefore, we are now seeking a Head of Finance, Business Development & Operations, as well as a Business & Operations Officer to join our organisation.

You can find links to both of these roles on LinkedIn.
