“I get the feeling that we’ve been living under a rock for weeks,” reads Cooper Jacoby’s “How Do I Survive?.” “But this isn’t the first time we’ve been swept up in a terrible and pointless mistake. The wind is blowing slowly, and we’re falling asleep at the computer.”

In honor of Jacoby’s inclusion in the 2026 Whitney Biennial, we’re sharing his contribution to PLANK Issue 1: The Night.

The text of “How Do I Survive?” derives from an eponymous work in which Jacoby trained an LLM on dozens of science fiction novels. The LLM was also hooked up to a thermostat, so that its responses were conditioned by the surrounding temperature and humidity levels. Part of Jacoby’s ongoing engagement with networked systems, which he pushes toward something like an emotional error message, these texts are the result of the AI model asking itself the titular question again and again.

“I often feel like art that employs AI, or any hype-cycle technology, is too focused on demoing the technology’s novelty, whether by pushing it toward monstrous horror-slop or lava lamp screen saver art. That stuff is truly mid, in the statistical sense of the word.” —Cooper Jacoby

Cooper Jacoby’s work utilizes AI to examine the technology as an unruly synthesizer of data, history, and even desire. His kinetic sculptures approach the surreal: clocks with mirrored domes and floating animal teeth, thermostats on fractured thermal landscapes, and a cow tongue following a 60-sided die.

Jacoby’s work will be featured in the 2026 Whitney Biennial, opening March 8.
