Kathleen Hansen, OTD’11, a member of Creighton’s first Creighton OTD Alaska Hybrid Pathway cohort, was drawn to OT after seeing how directly the profession could help people navigate the environments around them.

Through Creighton’s Alaska Hybrid Pathway, in partnership with University of Alaska Anchorage @ua.anchorage, she learned in the communities where she would eventually practice and experienced firsthand how Alaska’s geography, weather and Indigenous cultural connections can shape the delivery of care.

Today, Hansen works with SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium @searhc, where she has helped expand rehabilitation services and improve access to care closer to home.

Occupational therapist, educator and author Lindsey Larsen, OTD’07, helps future healthcare professionals see disability through a lens of lived experience and individualism.

“Meaningful development looks different for every individual and family, and our role is to support the path that works best for them,” she says.

Her experiences as a mother of an autistic and disabled daughter, as well as her clinical experiences, inspired her to write a book, titled “Meeting Exceptional Friends,” that teaches children and families to respond to disabilities with curiosity and openness.

🎓✨ Congratulations, Dr. Megan Brunell, OTD!

We are proud to celebrate Dr. Brunell’s achievement of earning her Post-Professional Doctor of Occupational Therapy degree from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. Her capstone project explored how education on 3D-printed orthoses can enhance occupational therapy practitioners’ confidence and readiness to integrate emerging technology into hand therapy practice.

In recognition of her outstanding scholarship, Dr. Brunell was also honored with the Emerging Researcher Award. 👏

As a lab faculty member in our Regis Occupational Therapy pathway and an occupational therapist at Mountain States Hand & Physical Therapy, Dr. Brunell continues to inspire students, colleagues, and the profession through her dedication to learning, research, and innovation.

Join our students in celebrating this incredible accomplishment. Congratulations, Dr. Brunell! We are so proud of you! 💙🎉 by @creighton_otd

From capstone to career, Creighton’s Doctor of Occupational Therapy program is preparing students to help shape the future of occupational therapy. For Whitney Orji, OTD’22, that journey began with a 14-week capstone course focused on burn care.

Her project focused on mental health and recovery for burn survivors, giving her the chance to develop an evidence-based program and take on a challenge that continues to influence the way she approaches her work. Today, she continues that work as an occupational therapist at her former project site, the Arizona Burn Center.

The doctoral capstone at Creighton connects students’ education to their professional goal and for some, it can even become a bridge to their careers. 28.4% of recent OTD graduates surveyed said they obtained a job at their capstone site or a similar site as a direct result of their capstone.

✨ Alumni Spotlight: Madison (Madi) Augustyn Staebell, OTD, OTR/L ✨

We are proud to spotlight Madison (Madi) Augustyn Staebell (OTD ’22), a home health occupational therapist with Brookestone Home Health in Omaha, where she primarily serves the geriatric population.
Following graduation, Madi completed Creighton’s Gerontology Fellowship (2022-2023) and continues to stay connected to the programs an adjunct lab instructor, assisting with both Physical Rehabilitation III and Older Adults courses in Omaha. She is also currently pursuing her MBA.

One of Madi’s favorite Creighton memories came through her fellowship experience, which included attending her first AOTA Annual Conference in Kansas City in 2023 and later presenting alongside her peers at the 2024 conference in Orlando following fellowship completion.

“It was an incredible opportunity for professional growth, especially being able to present alongside my peers!”
We are proud to see Madi making an impact in clinical practice, education, and lifelong learning while continuing to advance the occupational therapy profession. 💙💛 by @creighton_otd

When the dress code is medically complex… you try it all on. 🏥🙌

Our OT1s got hands-on with special equipment and patient care environments—experiencing firsthand what it feels like to wear and use equipment they’ll encounter in practice, then working through clinical scenarios to think critically about providing safe, occupation-centered care when that equipment is part of the picture.

Because understanding the equipment is one thing. Understanding the patient experience while using it is another 🫶🏻 by @creighton_otd

There’s more than one way to tell a story about health, illness and care. 💭

Dr. Russell and Dr. Thinnes recently explored Graphic Medicine: Comics, Care and Work of Justice, an exhibition currently on display at Creighton’s Lied Art Gallery. The exhibition features the work of MK Czerwiec, RN—a nurse, cartoonist and educator whose work uses comics to explore the complexities of illness and caregiving—along with works from several other artists.

For our OTD students, graphic medicine also makes its way into the classroom. Dr. Russell incorporates it into the mental health curriculum as a way for students to engage with perspectives and experiences that may not always be captured in a textbook or traditional clinical case.

That emphasis on lived experience also informs Dr. Russell’s work beyond the classroom, including her recently funded President’s Fund in Population Health project focused on centering community voices in the education of future health professionals.

The Graphic Medicine exhibition is open at the Lied Art Gallery through November 15. 💙 by @creighton_otd
