Through the combined experience of partnering with horses, becoming aware of our breath in meditation and abstract painting, you explore metaphors which mirror your life experiences, personal growth, and self discovery.

You’ll leave this workshop feeling grounded, inspired, and empowered by the embodied experience of merging your breath and deeply listening with the horses who are holding space for you. There is a heart-felt connection with the horses who see you fully in the moment.

Learn about mindfulness, authenticity, compassion, and communication from horses; Process the experience and express yourself through painting. We provide a safe, inclusive space for participants to have guided interactions with horses that facilitate creative expression.

The Lunar New Year is upon us! Tuesday February 17th is the beginning of the Year of the Fire Horse. We are reminded of the power of metaphors and the symbolism that the horse represents across cultures.

In ancient times, the Naja, an emblem which symbolizes the crescent moon, was placed on the headstall of a horse's bridle to ward off "evil spirits."

The word 'crescent' comes from the Latin term 'seres' meaning to bring forth and create. 'Crescere' is a Latin term for grow and thrive. This is a perfect metaphor for people in recovery who are creating new pathways and cultivating personal growth. This is why our nonprofit is called Crescent Moon Center.

Horses are seen as our teachers—mirroring our emotions and intentions. They symbolize intuition, emotional attunement, and relational awareness. The Horse embodies a spirit of resilience and transformation - qualities that resonate deeply with the mission of Crescent Moon.

Through experiential learning which combines mindfulness, expressive art, and a heart-to-heart partnership with horses, we offer a unique journey of healing and growth. By engaging with horses and creative expression, people find the courage to work on life challenges and goals, gain new insights into their emotions, and cultivate authenticity.

Beyond holistic wellness and personal healing, we nurture a supportive community through deep connection and shared experiences. Participants often describe our program as life-changing, along with the feeling of renewed hope and purpose.

When we visited the @crescentmoonctr last week, one of the @OpenHeartsFoundation grantees, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I’ve spent a lot of time around horses over the years, but this experience asked for something deeper. These therapy horses have an extraordinary way of mirroring who we are and they only connect when you show up as your most authentic self.

What followed was an incredibly moving process of reflection and expression, including a painting session that allowed us to translate what we felt into colour and form. It was surprising, grounding, and profoundly emotional. I’m grateful for spaces like this that gently invite us inward and remind us of the power of being fully present. Have you ever had an experience that shifted your perspective in an unexpected way? by @crescentmoonctr

The Sisterhood of Sobriety is a women’s sober living home in Contra Costa County. Most of the residents have significant histories of trauma and many also have mental health challenges.

The Sisterhood joined Crescent Moon for an afternoon of hands-on exercises with the horses. The afternoon included mindful meditation, grooming and partnering with their horses to signify their path to empowerment. The women integrated their experiences with the horses in a mask-making workshop.

Help us give The Sisterhood free bi-weekly expressive art and equine-assisted learning workshops. Together we can create a safe and nurturing community, where women can establish a firm foundation of recovery while rebuilding their lives.

Elizabeth had a history of struggling with mental health challenges. She first came to an astronomy night at Rush Ranch, and learned about Crescent Moon. As a writer, she was intrigued by the Horses and Poetry workshop, which she attended as a NAMI Solano volunteer and as part of the Solano Behavioral Health’s Suicide Support Group. This experience helped her approach writing in a different way. Elizabeth returned for more workshops and attended an intuitive art session that helped her connect to new parts of herself.

“I have been doing a lot of mindful activities at home… focusing on this part of nature and what that brings up. I have noticed a difference in my thoughts and the things that I'm able to express. It's brought a lot more personal gratitude towards the outdoors and nature and animals.”

After taking multiple workshops, Elizabeth took a more active role in the program and feels now like a part of our community. She is became a Certified Peer-Support Specialist and has earned a Certificate in Poetry as a Tool for Wellness. Elizabeth joined our Volunteer/Training and Internship Program. Elizabeth coordinates our volunteers. She attends Community Partner and outreach meetings, and is helping us build our community. She wants to be part of our growth.

“The only word that comes to mind with Crescent Moon is amazing; everything about it is just ‘amazing’. The people, the horses, their mission, everything about Crescent Moon I just love… I'd like to help them grow.”

Elizabeth’s involvement with Crescent Moon is one example of how our program can change lives. She's not alone.

Every day, someone struggling with mental health challenges asks: Is recovery even possible? At Crescent Moon Center, the answer is always “yes!”

Last week the partnership between Access Adventure, Crescent Moon Center, and Solano Land Trust came together with other community groups to provide wagon rides for veterans and students. Accessible outdoor adventures and experiences with horses are wonderful things to share with our community and it’s our partnerships that make it possible. 🙏 by @crescentmoonctr

Trusting the Season

Seeds in the ground
Quietly waiting
Not making a sound.

Waitin patiently For the water sound
splashing on the dirt above
Seeping through the earth with nutrients and love.

We begin to dig our roots deep down in the ground.
Sound of spring above
 Birds singing and flying around

Still in the wet dark
Will we one day bloom- how will we know
Trusting the process waiting to grow

We wait for the heat of the sun
Sprouting upward reaching for the light
The dirt is heavy what a fight

We break through the soil
Chasing the sun
Our time to bloom has come.

As we celebrate the change in seasons, we invite you to enjoy a deeply relaxing yoga practice and sound bath with meditation that encourages reflection and gratitude for the earth that sustains us.

This workshop will take place at SLT’s Rush Ranch, a place rich in beauty, history, and ecological significance. Immersion in open space allows participants to experience the calming rhythms of nature—wind moving through native grasses, the steady presence of horses, and the quiet expansiveness of protected land. This setting supports relaxation, nervous system balance, and a sense of belonging. The land connects all the people, plants, and animals that it touches.
