🚨 ATTENTION BOATERS: NORTH ATLANTIC RIGHT WHALE SEEN OFF JERSEY SHORE ON SATURDAY! 🐋

There have been lots of whales sightings across NY/NJ in recent weeks, but they are NOT ALL HUMPBACK WHALES! Critically-endangered North Atlantic Right Whales also make rare appearances in local waters.

North Atlantic Right Whale EG #5192, previously seen in September off Montauk, NY by our friends at @cresli_inc, was just seen on Saturday off Barnegat Inlet, NJ! This whale is badly injured and very likely still entangled in fishing gear.

Remember: DO NOT APPROACH Right Whales within 1500 feet (federal law), but DO REPORT all sightings of potential Right Whales to the NOAA Right Whale hotline (866 755-6622) and/or to local stranding organizations @marinemammalstrandingcenternj (NJ) and @amseasorg (NY). Sightings must be reported as soon as possible, to allow for any potential rescue efforts for this whale.

September 6,2026. North Atlantic Right Whale off Montauk. Seen during the @cresli_inc / @vikingfleetmontauk whale watch. This is a right whale that was entangled months ago off Canada and is very ill. Look carefully and you can see the fungus growing over its body. There are only about 370+ of them alive and without continued protection they will become extinct. Contact your US Senators and tell them to vote no on HR 9436, a house resolution that will delay protection for another 9 years! taken in Montauk, New York by @cresli_inc

Breaching baby at the End of the World 🐋

Humpback calves in this part of the ocean are born in the warm waters of the Caribbean, from which point they then travel with their mothers to more northerly feeding grounds. At some point between their birth and this encounter off of Long Island, it appears that this calf of a known Gulf of Maine whale had a run-in with orcas, as evidenced by the rake marks running down the leading edge of their fluke. This isn’t particularly uncommon for whales seen in the New York Bight, either! These little whales are true survivors.

Friday, July 31, 2026. Mom (left) and calf (on the right) humpbacks. This pair has been off Montauk since July 10, 2026. We've seen this mom in off Montauk in 2018, and again yearly since 2023. WE've also seen her in the Great South Channel as far back as in 2007. We are sailing on the @vikingfleetmontauk vessels 5 days a week in August. Join us in the experience.
