« You used to call her by so many different names: Sweet Home, Mommy, Good Fairy, Favorite Song, or Player One. Within the worlds you built, you would search for her, hoping to feel her hand on your shoulder, her fingers wiping the tears from your cheeks. Then comes that hour of the night when you find yourself wondering what the difference is between a castle and a cage. Making a wish could become a curse, you know. What do we do when the places, the practices we have created for ourselves, the ones in which we have sought refuge, become sites of violence themselves?

She is not there. Loneliness settles over you as shadows trail your every step. They never leave. And you cannot help but wonder: can fantasies bleed? »

For its third chapter, Architecture of Fears, Glitching Lashes slips into the walls of places that are familiar and yet unsettling, exploring the ways in which our fears and traumatic experiences take shape along the contours of our dreams, our hopes, and our struggles.

Four short films will be screened:

« You have been here before. Maybe not in this room, but you recognize the sound of someone moving on the other side of the wall. Sometimes the rain starts to fall, but nobody takes shelter. You sit beneath the same grey sky, watching the water pass through a world that was never supposed to get wet.
You know how to find your way through the streets. You have learned to live among strangers, without ever having to look them in the eyes. Together, you wander through cities that do not exist, rehearsing someone else’s quest, someone else’s war. Lights flickers behind your eyelids. You wonder if they are still playing when you turn off the game. You wonder if you are.

The sky bursts into fireworks. For a few seconds, everyone looks up at the same time. It’s a promise, and a warning. On the screen, the other world is burning.
You return to your room and press play again. »

For its second chapter, Is the place I play in the place I live in?, Glitching Lashes brings together works that approach gaming practices as both intimate experiences and political spaces, exploring the relationships between fictional environments and the material conditions in which they are produced, played, and inhabited.

« For as long as I can remember, every surface my gaze falls upon becomes a screen, casting the world as a land of promises and ghosts—an infinite doppelgänger city. Among all these wide-open eyes, some keep watch, others cry. Every one of them searches for someone to play with. Standing still in my room, camera on, I long for you and for the revolution to come, dancing as if it were the last day of my life, to the melody of bugs singing in the background. »

For its first edition, Glitching Lashes takes the form of a multimedia art festival, unfolding across both an exhibition space showcasing audiovisual artworks and evening screenings of artists’ films. Bringing together the work of 15 artists and filmmakers from the international scene, the project aims to highlight contemporary video creation in its many forms while rethinking the conventions and production of moving-image practices.

Curated as a four-chapter narrative, Glitching Lashes explores the porosity between video practices and other media, including video games, online livestreams, and 3D simulations as material for filmmaking. Through these intersections, the festival interrogates the contemporary political landscape, representations of traumatic violence, the desire for otherness, and the ways in which our everyday actions are shaped.
