10 portfolios, 1 Architect, 60 minutes

Speed Crit Episode 1 is now Live!

This is an incredible assortment of portfolios for our first episode, thank you so much to everyone who has submitted so far. These reviews take a lot of time and we are still working through the vast backlog of portfolios we have received this year. by @critbay

Babies first architecture portfolio, 2013

A portfolio should not be trial and error. If you are an architecture graduate, do not make the mistakes I made with my first portfolios. No wonder it took me almost a year to get my first job after architecture school. It is a mirror that anybody ever hired me. Please enjoy a selection of my worst portfolio images. by @critbay

We talk a lot about narrative in design, but the way you present a project is part of that narrative too.

@rayon.design have just launched 20+ new presentation templates designed to give students and professionals a much stronger starting point.

There’s a mix of styles, colour palettes, layouts, text hierarchies and compositions, with example drawings and imagery already in place so you can see how the page is meant to work.

Then you strip it back, replace it with your own content, and adapt it around your project.

It saves you from starting with a completely blank page, while still giving you enough flexibility to make the presentation feel like your own.

Really useful for concept boards, design development, final presentations and anywhere you need the story of the project to read clearly.

Architecture is following instructions

The bar is not THAT high! Sometimes, a company wants to see if you are able to follow simple instructions. If a company is asking you to keep your application to a maximum of 10 A4 pages as a pdf, then why are you posting them your A1 drawings?!

We cover all of this in our new one day course “From Portfolio to Practice in one day”, now available!

This is one of the first things we teach inside Portfolio to Practice. Your tutor understood your project already. An employer has zero context and maybe 30 seconds. They do not need 80 pages of everything you made, They need a very curated reason to keep looking. #architecture #portfolio #archistudent by @critbay

Architecture is learning from failure

In 2010 I was failing modules. In 2015 I was teaching them. The secret? Consistency. Showing up every day, learning from others and most critically, learning from your own failure.
