#7 complete. My weird interpretation of a volcano. I hadn’t planned on attempting to make one yet, but the block wants what the block wants…although the block was a tad thinner than I would have liked…I think it worked out ok. I had wanted to make it a military mount with the bit set I got, the mortise went great but the tenon cutter ruined and almost ripped off a stem from my vise. So I had to improvise and step the tenon and blend it. Worked out snug anyway. Though not as pretty 😁 Briar with contrast stain and hand cut resin stem. by @criterion.pipeworks

#6 in the books. Learned quite a bit with this one. Learned to slow down (because I didn’t), learned to trust my instincts (which I sometimes second guess) and learned to go lighter with the Tripoli! And also getting my processes down. Although I lost some stain, I’m ok with that because this one was purely a “if I can do it” exercise and indeed, I can. This one’s for me. by @criterion.pipeworks

Ok, books with pipes or, “Book Pipes”

I do love my books, and there are certain pipes made to compliment the time with one. Now sure you could immediately go with a church or semi-churchwarden, but what about just an exaggeration of a typical shape. Like these two examples. The natural long billiard by @murdercitypipes or the panel swooped iteration by new comer @criterion.pipeworks

Both very far outside my normal everyday “out & about” pieces. But I do find them quite conducive to sitting with a book. Legs up relaxed, taking in some nonsensical but amusing and entertaining literature.

Of course while reading archeological mystery’s with mayhem and murder, why not pair it with some @cornellanddiehl “Haunted Bookshop”

The two other pieces, simply because I enjoy oddities made with purpose from briar. I remember someone asked me at a show “why would you buy a little square pipe?” I mean it is carved to be a book! Acquire not just the pieces that speak to you for smoking, but also as to who you are and what you enjoy. Shapes, sizes and aesthetics that work for specific activities, can be fun.

The word Bibliophile: means a person who loves or collects books, enjoys reading, handling and being around them. A collector often builds a large personal library, for either their content or simply their aesthetics.

So, converting that definition, for people like us. Are we then “Pipalophiles” ?

#5 is special for a couple things. It’s my first commission, it’s my first Peterson(ish) shape(attempt), and it’s my first bent pipe. All this and the pleasure of also giving one of my oldest and dearest friends his first tobacco pipe. Stoked on how it turned out, hope you like it. SOLD by @criterion.pipeworks

That’s a wrap on #4. A lot of fun fine tuning things and figuring it out as I went. Big thanks to @garagemadepipetool for all the knowledge and guidance through this process, as well as the rod for this stem. And shout out to @jfurman631 for the support as well! Little work on #4 which is coming along nicely. I don’t have the amount of time I would like to dedicate to pipe making but with the time I do have I’ve been learning a lot and most importantly, having fun! by @criterion.pipeworks

#3 Panel (ish) Billiard inspired by an old Dunhill in the About Smoke book that my wife picked out for me to try and work. A lot of fun and I definitely learned a lot! Briar with medium brown stain and oil finish with ebonite stem by @criterion.pipeworks
