POKÓJ
Pokój is the polish name for room, when I was little I’d always hear my Grandfather talk about the importance of maintaining your space, your Pokój. Thematically the title ‘room’ inspired me because I see the brain and a house overlapping, it’s somewhere you store everything, all of your selflife exists in these places, and just like a house you’re mind is subject to rot, to the decay of time. This is what inspired me to explore hauntology through the stages of dementia. We watch as the character of lustrzane descends into their own mind as they’re forced to confront the existential horror of being trapped in their rotting brain. Pokój is a space where you are forced to confront the repression of memories, and the loss of what you love. It starts off unsettling but familiar, clouded by nostalgia Pokój makes lustrzane feel confused but comfortable. However as the story unfolds we see Pokój begin to deteriorate as his mind corrodes.

I’ve spent a lot of time growing up in my grandparents house, when we first came to New Zealand it’s where we lived for a few years, it’s a space that holds not only my memories, but 3 generations. Overtime however it’s been renovated, and the form of the house is something you’d struggle to even recognise. The Project production of this piece was a huge effort, scouting a viable abandoned location, finding photos of what my grandparent’s old house used to look, I spent time with my grandparents, my mum, my uncle, and looking through my own catalogues to forage any evidence of these bubbles in time. On top of that are all the animated sequences, 180 to 500 frames of individual editing is nothing if not time consuming. Every part of this was made with the intention of feeling like dementia, the effects built on top of every clip crafted for a hazy dreamlike quality, and the pivotal usage of music across the caretakers albums, audio exploring the spiral of dementia.

In the filth of myself I understood it. The hollowness of their empathy. The rate of in which mundanity returns to their days. Their hate became trivialised and I helped it happen. Exposure is a gritty RPG set in Pandemonium, a decaying supercity where warring factions and forgotten gods fight endlessly over power.
You play as a gun for hire investigating a conspiracy surrounding a vast underground highway after strange anomalies begin appearing across the city. Hired by a desperate councillor who believes the two are connected, you must uncover the truth, no matter the cost.
I used the jumping off point of the highway through the Bolton street Cemetery to inform the main story line of Exposure, where in the name of urban optimisation higher powers have desecrated a site better left untouched.

The Artist is an exhibitionist in the same way a clown is a performer, for the price of being known by an audience is all too enticing. For the deep need to bare yourself to the world, to want all the dirtiest parts of your soul to be on display is worth the chance of acknowledgment. Even if it’s met with confusion & disgust.

Marek would later struggle to identify the precise moment he decided to enter Pokój. The decision did not feel like a choice so much as the inevitable conclusion of a process that had begun weeks earlier. Every day he returned to the building. Every day he filled pages with sketches and notes. Every day he had discovered some new contradiction hidden within its proportions.
The building had occupied his thoughts so completely that crossing the threshold felt less like entering a foreign place and more like stepping into a conversation already underway. He slid his hands around the cold metal of the doorknob, lingering on each inch of its form Marek’s heart beat, the cold embrace of his obsession lay just between him and this entrance.
