How stinkin’ cute does my little sister Julia look in my Springtime Stripes Sweater? 🦋🌸🪻🌱

I have a story to share. After completing this sweater, I had a dream one night that my sister was wearing it. In the dream, she was walking in front of me on a beautiful street covered in trees during a bright autumn sunset. Then the next day, she messaged me about buying the sweater! She doesn’t use IG regularly but happened to log on that day and saw my post. Fate, kismet, serendipity, whatever you want to call it, the universe destined this sweater to be for her. And told me so in a dream! 💭

It is now the Julia Sweater 🥰

🪡 What I learned ⬇️

I would definitely call myself a sewing beginner and this was my first time in years stitching anything more than a busted seam.

I first learned to hand sew for a project back in middle school making sock monkeys 🧦🐒
Since then I’ve been mending holes and fixing buttons here and there but never anything more than that!

Here’s what I learned:

🧵It’s worth it to create creases with an iron (or hair straightener), having the crease keep its shape while I’m sewing definitely makes the process quicker and easier. I did this for the pocket but did not do it for the top edges of the lining and learned my lesson.

🧵I could have made the lining a tiny bit smaller because I didn’t account for the lining going inside the bag and therefore needing less fabric. It’s not noticeable at all but just something I noted for next time.

🧵I doubled my work because I did the ‘back stitch’ and then realized I wanted it more secure so did it again over the same stitches. I think next time I could start with a running stitch to attach the pieces, then double over for the back stitch for more security. It will be faster that way!

🧵It might be worth it for me to look into getting a sewing machine if I plan to do more of these. It will level up the aesthetic and save time! I’ll start by looking for one second-hand.

I’m so glad I found the perfect pillow case pattern to use as the lining. I still have lots of leftover fabric and plan to make another bag.

Overall, I love how it turned out and am grateful for the lessons learned along the way!

What do you think?

The wind was a paid actor 😆

I’m calling this the Silver Linings Crochet Throw blanket. I’m a big believer in repurposing yarn in projects or WIPs that no longer ignite delight.

I crocheted 2 throw pillow covers very early on in my crochet journey 2 years ago. While I have enjoyed and used the pillows since, I have also developed my crochet skills a lot since then! I kept thinking I can do so much better! So I did 😁

And keeping with my mission to use what I have before buying more yarn, the black and grey yarn were leftovers from gifts I made for my friends last year. Perfect!

I unraveled pillows I handmade and loved for 2 years, but the silver lining was that I then had a ton of fluffy white yarn!

It was a win-win! I got rid of pillows I was starting to dislike and gained a ‘free’ throw blanket (girl math)! No waste and no extra spending 🙌

All that work and what did it get me 😅

Originally planned for this gingham pattern to be the back of my pillow cover but the more I crocheted, the more I didn’t like it 🤨

So it will live on in this reel but I’ve already frogged (unraveled) it and plan to make a checkerboard pattern instead!

No regrets though! I learned how to gingham crochet in the process and will eventually have the pillow cover I’m satisfied with 🤪

Not me frogging this already because I didn’t like the colour scheme 🙂‍↕️ it no longer exists but can live forever on here!

This was my first time trying a plaid (gingham) crochet pattern. Though it was fun to crochet with the three colours, it looked a little dated to me. And if I don’t absolutely love it, I’m not going to finish it as is, I’m going to repurpose the yarn for some I do love! 🫶

What’s ‘blocking’ in crochet? 🧶🧩📌

Blocking involves dampening the crochet fabric, shaping it to size, pinning it out and allowing it to dry.

Depending on what the piece needs, blocking gets rid of any curling, improving the drape, evening out the stitches, making the fabric softer, shaping pieces before seaming.

In this case, I’m blocking to even out the stitches and to get an even square for my future pillow cover.

This tapestry is inspired by @devinedebris Painted Hills Wall Hanging that I modified into a square and changed up some of the colours.

For the back of the pillow cover, I plan to crochet a plaid (gingham) pattern in two panels so that I can sew in buttons and make the pillow cover removable! Stay tuned! ☺️

Can you tell I’m obsessed with the Block Stitch? 😅

After making a cozy for my hot water bottle, I just kept going… making covers for my iPad, Kindle and a cute carry bag for my portable speaker.

I’m on a mission to use up leftover and scrap yarn before buying more yarn and these quick and easy covers were great stash-busters! I think these are perfect for when I need to throw my device into a backpack/purse and want that extra level of cushion to protect them.

My emotional support hot water bottle just got a makeover 🫶 iykyk

I just haaate the feeling of the rubber on my bare skin so this solves that problem! It’s removable and washable.

I recently learned the block stitch and had some leftover yarn from a blanket a made a while back so thought I’d make this cover. Who wants one? I take custom orders ☺️🧶

Working on my first tapestry crochet project! I’m learning lots and it’s been my most challenging project yet.

I hate weaving in ends so I’m floating the yarn along the back side of the project. I watched tutorials on how to keep colour changes neat and yarn organized which has helped. I did have to frog rows here or there when I didn’t keep the yarn taut enough that it was bumpy on the back.

This pattern is adapted from the Painted Hills Wall Hanging by @devinedebris but I modified it into a square. I’m planning to make it into pillow cover!

I have an idea for a second pillow cover next, then I want to plan and design a big wall hanging as a focal decor piece!

So little time so much to crochet! Stay tuned ☺️
