Introducing our first Fancy New Band: @crookakl

Crook are a four piece band from Tāmaki Makaurau featuring Aki (Girls Pissing on Girls Pissing, Horror in Clay), Hugh (Alec, Caroles), Fraser (Heroes for Sale, Juiceroof), and Aaron (Saturnian Noise Collective, The Pleasure Majenta). With broad influences owing in part to earlier sounds of the Antipodean Gothic, Crook have fast become “a force to be revered and perhaps even feared” - Chris Cudby, Under the Radar.

Their debut album Murderous Intent was released via Tāmaki based independent label T & M on April 16 2026, cultivating significant interest from student radio across the motu.

A bit late in the day, but thanks to everyone who came to our shows when we were on tour, I (aki) am in love with all of you in a way that is borderline alarming and I suggest you secure your windows and doors at night (i WILL find you). Thanks heaps to everyone who played with us 💕💕 and big huge thanks to Liam and George for organising everything and being gods amongst men in general (and also to tess and helen for being our on tour muses hehe 😘😘) by @crookakl

@crookakl playing at @okahukura.studio on Saturday night.

I am somewhat at a loss for words to describe the sounds that spewed forth from the stage when these guys started playing. Loud comes to mind for starters,that's a given.

Ssswwhwhrrhrhsss, while not a word in the traditional sense, seems to sum up the guitar tone quite nicely, so we're gonna go with that.

Intense is another obvious one. While not the most descriptive word, it's definitely applicable and, in my opinion, well placed here.

I could spend the rest of my lunch break scratching my head thinking of words to describe their sound when in reality the best thing to do would just be to go and listen to their debut album "Murderous Intent" and find out for yourself!

It's pretty damn good!
