STEP 65 | body.motion.etch

body.motion.etch unfolded in Athens as a tactile inquiry into how bodies marked by gender, memory, and labour inscribe themselves into space, and how water-body cartographies map the city.
Carolin Müller worked with sanded aluminium cans—fragments of urban consumption—transforming them into lithographic surfaces that record movement, grease, and sound. In temporary studios across the city, performers engaged with these fragile materials through improvised gestures. As their bodies moved across the aluminium membranes, fat- and oil-based residues from their skin adhered to the metal. A lithographic etching process engraved these traces, allowing Carolin to hand-print the membranes onto paper. What remains are ephemeral notations, prints, echoes, and residues—mapping the tension between inscription and erasure, presence and disappearance, and the body’s quiet insistence on being known. Using sonic microtraces from the materials, environments, conversations, and movements of the performers, Carolin created sound compositions that accompany the video recordings made during the process.
Curated in close dialogue with Vasiliki Sifostratoudaki, the installation suggests a landscape that brings together these different imprints of the performative processes, alongside dialogues between the performers and the artist in residence, and encounters with the urban and water spaces around Nea Ionia.
I would like to thank Leda (Lida) Dalla @ledadallas, Jenny Papalampropoulou @crookedd_ , Stella Dimitrakopoulou @stelladrim, Katerina Kalentzi @katerina_kalentzi, Eugenia Vakalopoulou @eugeniavacalopoulou, Areti Athanasopoulou @areti_a, and Polina Vasileiadou @polinavasiliadou for their participation in the work, their intellectual and performative contributions as well as their generosity in sharing their experience as part of the work.

STEP 65 | body.motion.etch

We are happy to invite you to the exhibition of Carolin Müller @caro_prints , presented at the conclusion of her residency.
We look forward to welcoming you.

Exhibition
24 - 25th September, 2026
19:30- 22:00

Eptapirgiou 7, Nea Ionia, 14231

body.motion.etch explores questions about taking space and what the residues of our steps mean when these are caught in a visual language. The work articulates a synthesis of fragments built in collaboration with Athen's women performers and dancers. It pays attention to how the body of a woman inscribes itself into place and what kinds of traditions remain in traces. The work translates these bodies as they become utterances writing themselves onto alugraphic membranes.
