Making the Art — Workshop Series | The Roots

What does it mean to dance Jazz beyond the steps?
What does it mean to understand the stories, communities, cultures, and histories that live inside of the movement?
These are some of the questions that guide my Rooted Jazz Workshop Series with the students at Beacon High School.

This workshop explores the layered aspects of Jazz dance and what it means to be fully present within the form. Using music primarily from the 1970s, students are invited into an embodied experience that connects present day Black Vernacular movement with the movement traditions that came before it. Together, we investigate the footprints that were left behind and the artists, communities, and cultural moments that helped shape what we now recognize as commercial dance, Street Jazz, Hip Hop, and many other expressions found throughout the Black dance continuum.

At the center of this work is preservation.
How do we honor the integrity of these movement traditions while still bringing our authentic selves into the dance?
How do we contribute without erasing?
How do we build upon a foundation without forgetting who laid the bricks? Throughout the workshop, students are encouraged to investigate movement beyond execution alone.

For me, Rooted Jazz is not simply a style. It is a living archive. It is a conversation between generations. It is a reminder that movement carries memory. Every groove, every rhythm, every gesture, and every improvisational choice carries traces of the innovators, artists, educators, activists, leaders, and visionaries who paved the way before us.

My hope is that students leave this experience with more than choreography. I hope they leave with a deeper understanding of their connection to the Jazz continuum, a greater appreciation for Black cultural contributions, and the confidence to find their own voice within a lineage that continues to evolve.

Because dance is not only about where we are.
It is also about remembering where we came from and imagining where we can go next. taken in New York, New York by @crosscapturecollective

Making of the Art — Pt. 4 | The Performance

And just like that, six days became a performance. What began as an idea, a conversation, and a leap of faith transformed into something far greater than a dance piece.

Before anything else, I want to extend my gratitude to @dejiavuf for stepping in during the final stages of this process while I was traveling internationally. Knowing that the students would continue to receive the same energy, integrity, care, and artistic investment gave me peace of mind. Community is not simply about showing up when it is convenient; it is about showing up when you are needed. Thank you for helping carry this vision across the finish line.

To the students!! Watching your growth over these six workshop days was one of the greatest rewards of this residency. The confidence that emerged, the willingness to try, the commitment to one another, and the artistry that developed in such a short amount of time reminded me why I continue to do this work.

One thing I want people to understand about my work is that I do not teach dance simply for aesthetics. I am not interested in measuring success solely through a Eurocentric lens of what performance should look like or what technique should be. My intention has always been bigger than that. My purpose is to create spaces where people can grow. To help people recognize possibilities they may not have seen for themselves.

To remind them that excellence is not about perfection; it is about commitment, curiosity, growth, and the courage to continue. that artistry is not only about what happens on stage, but about how we show up for one another behind the scenes. As this chapter comes to a close, I wish each of these students nothing but success, fulfillment, and joy on their journeys; whether those paths lead them into the performing arts or somewhere entirely different.

Keep creating. Keep questioning. Keep growing.
Keep believing in yourselves. Continue striving to become the best version of yourselves, and never stop searching for ways to make your communities stronger than you found them. The dance may end, but the impact continues. With love, gratitude, and community. ❤️ taken in New York, New York by @crosscapturecollective

Making of the Art — Pt. 3 | Continuing Collaboration Within My Village

We only had six rehearsals to bring all of this to life, and if you know me, you know I dream BIG. A huge part of that comes from being raised in Harlem. We come from a place that believes there’s nothing we can’t do, just give us the time, space, intention, and energy, and somehow we will find a way to make it happen. I approached this process with that same mindset.

Bringing in Legendary Kim Holmes (my Aunty) alongside my former student, Ashley Boyd, became an important part of that continuum. I kept asking myself; How does another woman interpret these movements? How can different energies, histories, and approaches expand the work beyond my own perspective? There were so many layers of inquiry involved in gathering these women together, but at the center of it all was one message:

They are capable.

Kim, your universal knowledge and constant support gave the students reassurance that they were fully able to do this work. Even the simple act of you demonstrating how you interpreted movement, what resonated with your body, your spirit, and your artistry added another level of value and affirmation to the room.

Ashley entered the space with such vibrant and playful energy that students were able to reconnect with a sense of freedom and inner childlike curiosity within the movement. Having worked with me in so many capacities, she understands my approach to intention, execution, and movement quality. She became another set of eyes for me in the room, catching things I may not have seen while also helping nurture the students through the process.

Together, these women helped create something much bigger than simply fulfilling a teaching assignment. I entered this space asking myself: How can I bring my people into this work and leave behind something greater than choreography? The reality of teaching is that not every student will choose dance as a career path and that’s okay. But what will stay with them is the feeling of being seen, heard, supported, and genuinely wanted within a creative space.
