Exploring fear, trauma and human-shark encounters through lived experience. Podcast active, Film incoming
Created by @andrewkaineder & @brettburcher

POSTS STORIES REELS

Dr Riley Elliott is one of the world’s leading shark scientists, but before all of that, he was and still is a surfer and diver from New Zealand trying to better understand the animals he shared the ocean with.

That curiosity has taken him around the world, studying great white sharks, tracking their movements, producing documentaries, and helping communicate the science to a wider audience.

In episode 11, we dive into the migration of great white sharks between New Zealand and Australia, what decades of research are beginning to reveal, and why there are still so many questions science can’t confidently answer.

Riley explains how great whites navigate vast stretches of ocean, and why understanding those movements is so important for both conservation and public safety.

We also spend a lot of time discussing the current conversation around shark mitigation. From drones and electronic deterrents to shark nets, public perception and political decision-making,

Riley speaks openly about the complexity of managing risk in a wild environment. He shares what appears to be working, what isn’t, and where uncertainty still exists, and why it’s important to be honest about that uncertainty.

It also explores the balance between respecting sharks, improving ocean safety, and continuing to ask the difficult questions so many people along our coastlines are grappling with.

On an autumn morning in 2023, I had a very close call with a Great White Shark while surfing.
The moment was captured on a drone in crystal clear water.

We’ve kept the footage private, hoping it could be used for something more constructive than a sensational news piece. After 18 months of development, we’re now moving into production on a feature-length documentary titled @crossingthetideline. The film is a co-production with @stitchfilms.au and @regenerators - directed by @andrewkaineder, executive produced by @damon.gameau, and produced by Anna Kaplan.

Human–shark interactions appear to be increasing, with the impacts and unanswered questions rippling through coastal communities, car parks and lineups around the country. Approached without an agenda, the film sits not just with those questions, but with trauma, PTSD and mental health.

This is an extremely nuanced and sensitive subject. Having lived through the experience, it’s created space to examine fear, perception and reality, and to ask how we might coexist with sharks in the ocean.

There are still many questions without clear answers. With several incidents already this year in NSW, we’re launching this page early and will update as the film progresses. Alongside the film, we’ll also be releasing a podcast to continue the conversations we can’t fit into 80 minutes.

Dave Rastovich has spent more time than most in the ocean and has a library full of stories because of it.

This is a short excerpt of just one of those stories.

We have surf journalist, editor, author, father, prostate cancer survivor and now advocate @bytimbaker with us on this episode of Crossing the Tideline.

An interesting guest to feature on a shark podcast in that he hasn’t had any particular experiences with GW Sharks themselves, but he has metaphorically patted a few.

The chat dances around what sits underneath our innate fear of Sharks and some deeper questions about confronting mortality.

Plenty of good takeaways in this chat in terms of looking after yourself, lifestyle factors and choices that we have, the importance of family and community and the growth that can come from discomfort, challenge and vulnerability.

I am a big fan of Tims curiosity and awareness to treatments that also extends out to trying things in life and being open to re learn whatever the subject. Episode out now wherever you listen by @crossingthetideline

In the latest episode, Dr Paul Butcher from @nsw_sharksmart references a 2018 CSIRO test when talking about current estimates of Great White Shark numbers.

8 years is a long time, particularly given how much the conversation around shark numbers has changed since then.

More current research will help refine our understanding of shark populations and trends, and provide greater transparency around the findings by @crossingthetideline

Our Principal Research Scientist Dr Paul Butcher is the special guest on a three-part Crossing the Tideline podcast series exploring the target species of the NSW Shark Management Program – white sharks, bull sharks and tiger sharks.

In Episode 1, Dr Butcher sits down with host Brett Burcher to discuss the white shark.

Drawing on more than a decade of research through the NSW Shark Management Program, Dr Butcher discusses:

• white shark populations and what we’re learning from genetics
• white shark movements in NSW waters
• latest white shark research
• predation behaviours
• interactions and incidents
• mitigation technologies and what we’re learning from the data.

Barney Currie spent just 14 days observing this stretch of coastline in South East Qld and recorded a surprisingly large number of sharks. The dates were from 17th December 1948 to 1st January 1949.

It’s an interesting number to look back on. Particularly when there’s a feeling these days that there are more sharks around than there used to be.

To see that many sharks in just 14 days, is probably well beyond what most of us would have imagined.

It doesn’t tell us what species exactly or the specifics of his processes, but it’s a pretty compelling piece of data to have from 14 days of observation.

Thanks for your work Barney and @firstnationslifeguards lifeguards for passing on the info.

If anyone knows what the processes were back then for alerting swimmers when sharks were present, please let us know. by @crossingthetideline

In the latest ep of ‘Crossing the Tideline’ podcast, you will meet Aaron Graham and Paddy James @paddyboomsticks .

Aaron is the founder of @pro_guarding , a company that delivers water safety and medical services to a range of industries.

Aaron and his team currently run control Trauma first aid courses across Australia.

Ive been to a few of these courses and they are shockingly good. They provide first response style training for life threatening trauma wounds and injuries.

They make it so realistic and the info, both the theoretical and practical side of things is so comprehensive, relatable and transferable to all type of situations.

The reason I say shockingly good is because after doing the first course, I was quite shocked and disappointed in myself that I did not already have these skills.

It’s an incredible initiative and Aaron will be chatting us through everything we need to know about these courses.

We also hear from Paddy James (here)who facilitates the courses.

His experience in emergency situations is so noticeable when you partake in the course.

Paddy certainly doesnt fuck around and he gives us some expert tips on what to do if we find ourselves first on scene to a traumatic injury.

In episode 13 we hear from @lucastownsend and @_hickey___ (speaking here) from @surfing_nsw .

Lucas is the current CEO of Surfing NSW. He has been sitting at meetings and getting representation into some of the funding decisions being rolled out across government.

Lucas is from the northern beaches so a good voice to hear from in the wake of what communities have been going through, the feeling on the ground, and what’s potentially coming from it all.

Matt Lawson is often the man on ground in communities rallying shark awareness education programs and also in the aftermath of human shark interactions to offer support and assistance.

He’s been in the game a long time and has plenty to share from his experiences.

It’s really clear that both Lucas and Matt really care about surfing, surfers, and the overall safety of anyone entering the water.

Surfing NSW is not just an organisation who look after members of board riders clubs, competitive surfers and surfings elite, thier impact and influence is massive in a cultural sense and we are all beneficiaries in some way of their efforts and realtionships.

They help resource and train drone operators surveying your beach or nearby beaches, they are in conversations with state governments and pushing innovative operations to make our coastlines safer. by @crossingthetideline

@surfing_nsw support all level of surfers, but it doesn’t stop there.

Chances are they are representing you in ways you are not aware of.

They provide physical representation at government decision making tables, advocacy for longer drone hours to cater for pre and post work beachgoers, facilitation of community events such as control bleeding trauma courses and other ocean safety courses and community support in the aftermath of a traumatic event.

New announcement this week as of September 1st are that drone operation hours (on days they do fly) have been extended to 6:15 am - 5 pm to account for increasing spring daylight.
