adventuregrillz left a comment on one of my videos asking something along the lines of, ā€œWhy do you think this is happening in Memphis?ā€

There are now thousands of comments on that post and I cannot find the original one, so this is my reply.

If the only story you know about Memphis is crime, Black, poor, dangerous, scary then you do not know Memphis.

You don’t know the city that checks on its neighbors.
The city that feeds people.
The city that shows up.
The city that is kind, generous, stubborn, creative, gritty as hell and fiercely loyal to its own.

You don’t know Grit and Grind as something deeper than basketball.

And you are also missing the part where our country runs through this city.

Memphis is not disposable.
Memphis is not incidental.
Memphis is strategic.

And if you think what happens here stays here, you are not paying close enough attention.

Your voice matters.

Don’t comply in advance. Don’t assume somebody else will handle it.

Check your registration. Make sure your name is where it’s supposed to be.

Make sure you’re able to be counted.

Because ā€œfn€k themā€ energy is useless if we keep handing the people abusing their power more of our own.

Tennessee’s voter registration deadline is October 5.

You can register or check your registration anytime at GoVoteTN . gov or Vote . org.

While people sit out elections, laws still get passed.

Tennessee already enacted the law creating the Tennessee safe initiative task force attached to TBI.

Memphis (un)Safe Task Force 365 days stats:

6 deaths

121 neighbors taken at once 5 criminal allegations between them

189,000 traffic stops for MINOR violations that’s equal to 1 in 3 Memphians

63% of arrests are for NONVIOLENT crimes

$248,000,000 for National Guard alone that doesn’t include the bill for the 31 other Federal agencies embedded

Register. Check your registration. Send this to somebody who needs the reminder. šŸ—³ļø

It’s time for an appreciation post. These creators are some of my current teachers:

FIT, my first teacher that refused to let me stay in ā€œI don’t see color.ā€ ā€œI’m not racist, though.ā€ I am so grateful for your loving kindness. šŸ’›šŸ¦‹

And these are some of the people teaching me what it looks like to move from allyship into accomplice work:

@knittingcultlady @whyisthatracist @votegloriaj

Antiracism isn’t something you declare yourself finished with.

You learn. You listen. You examine what you inherited. You change your behavior. And then you keep doing it.

There’s a @SURJ antiracist training tonight with the person that literally wrote the book on how to be an anti-racist Ibrim X. Kendi. If you’ve been asking yourself, ā€œOkay, but what do I actually DO?ā€ here’s somewhere to start. After you register to v o t e, of course.

Full comment: ā€œI’m sorry ma’am, but I lived in Midtown and heard gunshots constantly from my front porch. there was a man shot in the lobby of the hotel on my birthday. I moved out to the suburbs as far as I could, and probably not far enough. as a rule, if you don’t do anything wrong, there’s no reason for the police to look at you.ā€ by @crowandember

10 DAYS.

That’s how long you have left to register to vote in Tennessee for the November 3 election.

Don’t just assume you’re registered.

Check it.

If you aren’t registered yet, register.

If something looks wrong, you still have time to fix it.

You can do both through GoVoteTN Tennessee’s official voter site.

Deadline: October 5.

Make this easy on yourself:

Go to GoVoteTN (.com, .gov or the app)

Check your voter registration.

Register if you need to.

Then send this post to one person and ask them to check theirs too.

If you run into a problem with your registration, contact your county election commission.

Tennessee’s Division of Elections also lists 1-877-850-4959 for voter questions.

You do not have to know everything about every candidate today.

You do not have to have your entire ballot figured out today.

You just have to make sure you still have the ability to choose when November 3 gets here.

If you read nothing else about the Memphis Safe Task Force this week, read the September 16 edition of the Memphis Flyer.
Start with ā€œStonewalled,ā€ by Kailynn Johnson and Toby Sells. Reporters describe a year of struggling to get basic answers from the task force about what is happening in our city.

Then read ā€œNew TBI Agents ā€˜Embedded’ with Memphis Safe Task Force,ā€ by Sam Stockard of the Tennessee Lookout.

Tennessee has funded a new TBI task force with statewide investigative authority, with 15 positions already embedded in existing Memphis operations.

And then get curious.

Who has authority over whom?

Where does the Memphis Safe Task Force’s jurisdiction actually end?

Who answers to Memphis?

Who doesn’t?

Who can investigate without being invited?

And who is responsible for providing the public answers when something goes wrong?

I don’t have all of those answers yet.

I’m digging.

Bring your questions to the comments. Bring what you find, too?

Because the more I learn about how power is operating in Memphis, the more convinced I am that we need to understand the machinery- not just react to what comes out of it.

Please, read and support your local journalists.

It’s National Voter Registration Day. šŸ—³ļø

If you’re not registered, today is a perfect day to fix that. In Tennessee, use the app GoVoteTN. Outside of TN use Vote . org

If you are registered? Check it anyway. Verify your status, name, address, and voting districts so there are no surprises later.

For Tennessee voters, the registration deadline for the November 3 election is October 5.

Check your registration. Register if you need to. Save this carousel for later. Send it to somebody who might need the reminder.

Voting starts long before Election Day. This is step one.

Check. Register. Vote.

A business can deserve investigation.

An owner can deserve accountability.

A crime can deserve prosecution.

None of those things make every person standing inside that business guilty.

That distinction should not become difficult to understand just because the people being detained are Black, Brown, or Latine.

Legends Lounge had documented problems. El Corralón was under investigation. I am not arguing otherwise.

I am asking a different question:

What did each individual person do to justify taking away their freedom?

If the answer is essentially, ā€œWell, they were there,ā€ we have a problem.

Civil liberties cannot mean protect me from government overreach while becoming well, what did they expect? when it happens to somebody else.

So imagine yourself buying the lightbulbs.

Then ask yourself:

Whose freedom do I instinctively recognize as worth protecting?
