“Haze Daze”

Here’s some varied moments of my 47th year, of this particular incarnation, on this particular earth.

47 has had ups and downs, thrills and spills, beauty and disgust, connection and loneliness, elation and suffering, love and rage, laughter and tears, and so much much more than words can describe. All the polarities. I’m aware of the thoughts, beliefs, narratives and behavior patterns that were the best version of myself in my 47th year, as well as those that were the worst version of myself. We’ll see who I choose to be next year. Compassion and forgiveness are necessary in this process of self evaluation, as well as healthy shame when called for.

This year I encountered a neck injury, which prevented me from surfing for over two months. Without the distraction of daily surfing or the numbing of pain killers, the midlife crisis / dark night of the soul I had been in most of my year was greatly amplified… can you say lost as fuck? challenging times for sure. With very few answers, here is where I’m at right now.

I love the ocean. I love feeling the sand between my toes. I love watching the sunrise alone. I love laughter. I love a good hug. I love my family. I fucking love music. I love books. I love drawing stick figures. I love the smell of plants in the morning. I love dogs and cats and crows and all those cute sandpipers with their little legs that move so fucking fast. And I love, well, a few of you to 😂. Here’s to 48 🤙 by @crowcuts

Years ago, @shreddy_krugar let me try this gem @chemistrysurfboards out and I fell in love with it immediately. Shortly after falling in love with it, I buckled the nose, and Teddy kindly allowed me to keep her.

She’s had five buckled noses between Teddy and myself, I think, I’ve lost count (thanks @perryfaanes for the repairs). After the fifth buckle, I still wasn’t ready to let her go, so decided to give her a new look.

I used spray paint for the base colors, and then posca’s for the fill in work and finished off with a clear coat.

My painting skills aren’t the best. I’d say my style is like a really advanced five year old. I dig eyes, hearts, stick figures, and poems, so figured I’d throw them all on there. I found an old sketch I’d done in rehab years ago, lots of rehabs 😂, lots of sketches, and I used it as my blueprint for the detail.
