If you’re looking for the ultimate upstate fall road trip from NYC, walking through this 200-foot-deep gorge draped in vibrant reds, golds, and oranges is an absolute must. With 19 cascading waterfalls and stone bridges, it feels like a living fairytale.

Planning a trip for peak fall foliage? Save this post and read on for everything you need to know before you go! 👇🏽

🚗 How to Get There (Driving from NYC):

• The Route: It’s roughly a 4.5 to 5-hour drive (about 250 miles) northwest of NYC. The easiest route is usually taking I-80 W or I-280 W to I-81 N through Pennsylvania/Upstate NY.

• Address: Main Entrance is at 1009 N Franklin St, Watkins Glen, NY 14891 (right at the southern tip of Seneca Lake).

🕒 Hours of Operation:

• The Park: Open year-round, dawn to dusk.

• The Gorge Trail: Seasonal (typically open mid-May through mid/late-October).

🎟️ Tickets & Fees:

• Vehicle Entrance Fee: $10 per vehicle during peak season (covers parking and park access).

• Hiking: Free once you're inside!

• Shuttle: There is a seasonal shuttle between the park's main, south, and upper entrances if you don't want to hike back up (around $6 per person, one-way).

💡 Travel Tips:

• Best Time to Visit for Fall Foliage: Aim for early to mid-October (typically peaking between October 10th and October 21st) to catch the brightest autumn colors.

• Beat the Crowds: Fall weekends draw massive crowds. Arrive early morning to actually enjoy the scenery in peace.

• Trail Difficulty: The Gorge Trail is moderate with over 800 stone steps. The trail gets slick with autumn moisture and fallen leaves. Wear sturdy shoes with good traction.

• Facilities: Restrooms and snack bars are available at both entrances.

• No Pups on the Gorge Trail: Dogs are allowed on the rim trails, but prohibited on the Gorge Trail for safety.
