Life on Land
January 30–March 14, 2026

Time Seeds: A Prairie Cosmogram is an immersive, multi-channel sound meditation created for the exhibition by Dr. Paul Rudy, Curators’ Distinguished Professor and Coordinator of Collaborative Arts Initiatives, UMKC Conservatory.

This multi-channel sound meditation installation is shaped by the artist’s listening to the prairie over more than a decade. In the gallery, eight channels of pre-recorded and processed field recordings form a continuously shifting drone, creating a sonic field that holds multiple temporal layers at once.

Visitors enter this larger field by planting additional time seeds in the present through their own devices. These brief sounds gather into a chronophonic map of the land’s geological, ecological, ancestral, and future-facing strata vibrating at different densities, coexisting within a single, cohesive sonic experience.

The sound resonates like layers of geology accreting upon the land, while also offering a vertical mode of listening—a kind of sonic borehole through which multiple temporal layers may be heard at once. Sounds enter and recede, sometimes gathering briefly before drifting apart again, as weather and seasons do. What is heard as ancient, living, or emergent is not separate material, but the same substance encountered at different temporal scales.

Paul Rudy is a composer, sound artist, and educator whose work explores sound as a medium for presence, perception, and relationship. His practice spans composed music, sound healing, land-based work, and collaborative projects integrating ecology, community, and care. Central to his work is the cultivation of harmonic intelligence: an embodied capacity to sense coherence and remain present within a shared, living system.

Listening to the Land: An Evening of Film
Wednesday, March 4, 6–8 pm

Emily & Todd Voth Artspace
16 East 43rd Street
Kansas City, MO 64111
(RSVP link in our bio)

This program is organized by Caitlin Horsmon, Associate Professor of Film & Media Arts at UMKC. Horsmon is an award-winning artist, curator, and educator making films, videos, and installations. She is a former director of the artist-run space, Plug Projects and a founder of Stray Cat Film Center. She was trained in Cinema, Comparative Literature, and Media Production at the University of Iowa and graduated from Oberlin College. Before her move to academia, Caitlin worked as the community outreach coordinator for The Chicago International Film Festival and was the director of the Thaw media festival.

Her work has been exhibited around the world and she has received numerous awards and grants including a Rocket Grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Charlotte Street Foundation and Spencer Museum of Art. Her work is distributed by The Collectif Jeune Cinéma.

“My work examines the material world by mining stories from places, bodies and objects. With attention to location, visual history, identity and absence I explore the imaginary of the everyday to address the politics of knowledge and the loci of perception.”

For me art making is a way to ask questions, and I am curious about how public spaces are constituted, and what gets purposefully excluded or simply overlooked. I make films, videos, photographs and installations, but my practice creates experiences as often as objects, exploring intersections in my life as a citizen, community member and academic through research, programming, collaborations and curation of exhibitions and screenings. My goal is to dig deeply into the world around me through creating images and sounds, time-based experiences and activities of resistance, and to explore the disposition of the real, the ways we construct and describe our world and the nature of looking.” –Caitlin Horsmon

Listening to the Land: An Evening of Film
Wednesday, March 4, 6–8 pm

Emily & Todd Voth Artspace
16 East 43rd Street
Kansas City, MO 64111

The Artspace is pleased to host an evening of global artists’ films that examine landscapes shaped by conflict, memory, and human intervention.

Inspired by the exhibition Life on Land, these works present terrain as active and unstable sites that both hold and resist the stories imposed upon them. Attending to the material and temporal dimensions of place, the films are animated by light, movement, and absence. Through these shifting geographies, landscapes emerge that remember, reveal, and resist.

Organized for the Artspace by Caitlin Horsmon, Associate Professor of Film & Media Arts at UMKC, the program features the following short films:

Terrestrial Sea, Cathy Lee Crane, US/Mexico, HD video, 15 minutes, 2022
Water and paths of migration converge to shape the borderlands along the U.S/Mexico boundary when staging actors in a politicized landscape leads to the rupture of fiction for fact.

La Laguna del Soldado (The Soldier’s Lagoon), Pablo Álvarez Mesa, Columbia/Canada, 16mm on video, 76 minutes, 2024
200 years after Simón Bolívar’s liberation campaign across Colombia, La Laguna del Soldado retraces The Liberator’s journey across the high-altitude marshlands while searching for glimpses of his ghost still present in this historically contested territory.

Redshift, Emily Richardson, United Kingdom, 16mm on video, 4 minutes, 2001
In astronomical terminology, 'redshift' is a term used in calculating the distance of stars from the earth, hence determining their age. The film has a gentle intensity to it, and is composed of changes of light across the sea, sky and mountains. It shows movement where there is apparent stillness, whether in the formation of weather patterns, movement of stars, the illumination of a building by passing car headlights or boats darting back and forth across the sea’s horizon.

Life on Land
January 30–March 14, 2026

Opening Reception: Friday, January 30, 6-8pm

Listening to the Land
Friday, January 30
6-8 pm

The opening reception for Life on Land will include Time Seeds: A Prairie Cosmogram, an immersive, multi-channel sound meditation created for the exhibition by composer, musician, and land steward Dr. Paul Rudy, Curators’ Distinguished Professor and Coordinator of Collaborative Arts Initiatives, UMKC Conservatory.

This sound activation serves to launch Listening to the Land, a series of artist-led encounters that extend the themes of Life on Land through embodied engagement with sound and place. Designed as a set of experiential programs, the series invites participants to attune to landscape through listening, movement, and shared observation.

Inspired by the exhibition, this program includes an evening of film organized by artist and film scholar Caitlin Horsmon, and a range of field-based experiences including artist-led walks. Highlights include a guided listening walk with land artist and environmentalist Karen McCoy, and a visit to the KU Field Station to experience Here-ing, a land-art installation by Janine Antoni created in partnership with the Spencer Museum of Art. Together, these encounters offer expanded ways of understanding landscape as something heard, felt, and experienced over time.

Stay tuned for more information about our public programs. Visit www.kcai.edu/artspace and follow us on Instagram and on Facebook to receive the most up-to-date information about these and other programs.
